Edmund didn’t say anything the entire time he was in the room, and neither did Lazarus. Both of them remained silent because they still couldn’t believe that Primrose had almost been hurt while they weren’t by her side.
For Edmund, the weight in his chest only grew heavier after hearing Leofric’s explanation. His gaze moved back and forth between Lazarus and the sleeping Primrose, and in his mind, he imagined their older faces from the past, as if time itself was pulling him backward.
Even now, he still couldn’t imagine how painful it must have been for her to witness her father being beheaded right in front of her.
"Father," Edmund said softly as he walked over to Lazarus. Seeing his father-in-law dozing off in the chair, he gently placed a hand on his shoulder. "Why don’t you rest for a while in your room? You must be exhausted after dealing with everything in Veloria County."
Lazarus jolted slightly when Edmund touched his shoulder. He rubbed his face roughly, as if trying to stay awake even though he was already truly sleepy.
"She asked me to stay," Lazarus said with a weary sigh. "My poor daughter... she must have been terrified earlier."
Edmund patted Lazarus’s shoulder a few more times. "It’s alright, Father. I’ll stay here, so she won’t be alone," he said. "It would be bad if you fell ill from lack of rest. She would only feel even more saddened if that happened."
Lazarus let out another sigh. After thinking it over for a long moment, he finally gave in to Edmund’s suggestion.
"Alright, then." He slowly stood from his chair. Before leaving, he reached out and softly patted Primrose’s head, his touch full of affection. Then he turned to Edmund. "But if anything happens to her—no, even if she only wants to see me, you must call me right away."
Edmund nodded without hesitation. "Of course, Father. I’ll inform you immediately if Primrose asks for you."
With that small reassurance, Lazarus forced himself to walk away, even though his heart felt heavy. Truthfully, he didn’t want to leave his daughter’s side. But Edmund was right, if he became sick from lack of rest, it would only worry Primrose even more.
And more than that, Lazarus trusted Edmund completely. As long as his son-in-law remained with her, he believed his daughter would be safe.
As soon as Lazarus stepped out of the room, Edmund moved to the chair beside the bed—the one Lazarus had just vacated—and sat down quietly.
His eyes rested on his sleeping wife, filled with love and gentle concern. He leaned closer and carefully brushed his fingers through her hair, as if even the slightest carelessness might wake her.
"I won’t leave you, my wife," he murmured gently.

"Oh, damn it!" Primrose jerked in surprise when she noticed someone sitting so close beside her. But the tension quickly left her body as soon as she recognized her husband. She exhaled shakily. "You really scared me."
Edmund, who had been trying to read a book but didn’t find it interesting, quickly closed it. He had been sitting quietly next to Primrose from the beginning and hadn’t moved from that spot until she woke in the middle of the night.
"How are you feeling now?" he asked gently, placing the book aside and leaning toward her. "Do you still feel unwell?"
[Leofric said she wouldn’t suffer physically from seeing those fragments of her past, but...] Edmund’s thoughts raced. [No healing power can ease the pain in her heart that quickly.]
