When Nicolette and Braxler initially got engaged, the Chance family had opposed it vehemently.
Jennifer had rushed over from Jadeborough with Bernice to dissuade Nicolette.
But Nicolette kicked up a fuss, saying that she would rather die if she weren't allowed to get engaged to Braxler.
Under such circumstances, the Chance family had no choice but to relent.
It was also for that very reason that Marion fearlessly made exorbitant demands.
Not only did she refuse to give a betrothal gift and demand a car and a house, but she even insisted on having the Chance family bear the cost of the wedding banquet.
Clearly, she didn't only want Nicolette but wanted the Chance family to finance everything.
Being a family of scholars, coupled with Nicolette's threat of death, the Chance family had no choice but to relent begrudgingly in the end.
They promised to gift a car worth over two hundred thousand, a spacious three-bedroom apartment in the city center of around one hundred and forty square meters, and bear all expenses of the wedding banquet when Nicolette got married.
When Marion brought it up again, it was as no different from rubbing salt in their wound.
However, there was nothing they could do.
For the sake of her daughter, Cecilia was left with no choice but to nod stiffly. “Of course. Once we've discussed everything today, we'll go and shop for a car tomorrow, start house hunting the day after, and get everything sorted before the wedding. As for the wedding banquet, it will be held at this hotel! When the time comes, all you need to do is provide the number and list of guests from your side.”
Cecilia's tearful words and the gloomy expressions on the faces of Samuel and the others had Bernice grip Finnegan's hand tightly beneath the table, her fingernails digging into his flesh.
She felt heartbroken that her grandfather's family was treated so terribly, yet they couldn't even express their dissatisfaction.
Wincing in pain, Finnegan sucked in a breath and quietly uttered, “Darling, if you want to pinch someone, go and pinch that shameless old widow. Why are you pinching me?”
Only then did Bernice snap back to her senses. She whispered, “Finnegan, you must resolve this matter. I can agree to anything you ask.”
She truly detested Marion and her son.
Unfortunately, she couldn't show it due to her good manners.
Finnegan nodded in understanding while also glancing at his phone.
He had already instructed Alisha to make the arrangements but was unsure about the outcome.
Across from him, Marion shook her head. “That was in the past. But on second thought, it's not acceptable. Raising a son is no easy task, so the dowry needs to be increased.”
The entire place immediately fell silent.
Everyone was dumbfounded.
After all, such a comment would only arise when a daughter was married off to the groom's family, whereby the dowry was considered insufficient.
It was unheard of for the groom's family to complain about the dowry being insufficient when it was the bride footing it instead.
Moreover, the sum of the dowry amounted to several million, so it was not little at all.
Nonetheless, Marion shamelessly put forward the demands she had long since decided upon.
“A three-bedroom apartment of a hundred and forty square meters is too small. We want a five-bedroom apartment of no less than two hundred square meters. Then, Braxler's grandmother and his uncle's family can all move in. As for the car, make it a better one. It should at least start from five hundred thousand. Anyway, your family can afford it. Additionally, once Nickie is married, she shall devote herself to her husband and children by being a housewife, so she shall transfer ownership of her kindergarten to Braxler before the wedding. The man is the head of the household. Lastly, your family has connections, and the assets of Nickie's uncle's family sum up to tens of billions. So, arrange a job for Braxler with a starting annual salary of a million. I can't think of anything else at the moment. I'll mention it when it comes to mind later!”
She was all confident, speaking matter-of-factly.
It was as though Nicolette had no right to marry Braxler if the Chance family did not agree.
Nicolette quickly interjected, “Mrs. Ainsley, rest assured that I'm not that kind of person. I will spend my entire life with Braxler.”
“Who can tell for sure? It's always better to have some security!” Marion said.
It was as though Nicolette was worried that Marion would oppose the marriage. Turning, she urged Hector and Cecilia, “Mom, Dad, please agree quickly.”
Agree? Is that even possible?
Hector and Cecilia, Samuel and his wife, and even Patrick and Jennifer, who couldn't get a word in edgewise, were all utterly reluctant.
There had never been instances of a mother making such outrageous demands when her son was getting married.
Seeing them all so furious that words eluded them, Finnegan chuckled bitterly and said, “I think it's fine. It's totally reasonable.”
Marion was taken aback for a moment. Then, she laughed and said, “Young man, you sure have a broad perspective!”
Eugene widened his eyes. “What are you saying, Finnegan?”
“What's wrong?” Finnegan feigned bewilderment. “Don't you need to give a betrothal gift when you get married in the future? Aren't you supposed to buy a car and a house? What's wrong with expecting some things in return that she's raised a son this old to be live-in a son-in-law? After all, his son would become part of the Chance family after the marriage.”
Upon hearing that, Eugene chuckled. “You're right, Finnegan. We should pay more for a live-in son-in-law.”
Marion, who was initially quite pleased, widened her eyes in anger and exclaimed, “What are you talking about? Our family is looking for a daughter-in-law, not marrying off a live-in son-in-law!”
Finnegan gave a gasp, his eyes going wide in surprise.
He delivered an Oscar-worthy performance.
“Goodness, after listening for so long, I actually thought your son was a live-in son-in-law. It turned out that you're expecting a dowry when you're looking for a daughter-in-law. Do you have a daughter, then?”
