The Mocked Miss’s Hidden Crowns novel Chapter 1006

“I need to head to the lab.”

Anthony glanced at her hand. When he’d helped Nora just now, Charlotte’s hand had gone weak again.

“I’m fine.” She caught the concern in his eyes and tilted her chin with a casual smile. “Want to come with me?”

“Yeah.”

He didn’t push her to rest. After everything that happened today, it was obvious how much Franco and Nora meant to her.

They walked to the lab together. Charlotte slipped into the pharmacy to mix up medicine, while Anthony waited outside. He leaned against the wall, arms crossed, his brows pulled together as he watched her, not looking away for a second.

“Any news on what we’re investigating?” His voice was low. “Especially about the catalyst.”

“Nothing yet.”

Hans came back, head down, face clouded with frustration. The missing catalyst for the gene mutation drug had been a mystery for decades. The research institute and everyone on the Isle of Veil had searched everywhere and still found nothing. Right now, there were no leads at all.

Anthony tugged at his collar, a flicker of irritation passing through his deep eyes. His voice came out rough. “Bring Dr. David to Imperial Heights.”

“Dr. David?” Hans looked up, surprised. “Are you planning to have him check Charlotte?”

She was a doctor herself. Why get someone else involved?

“Charlotte always tries to handle everything on her own. If I hadn’t caught on, she probably wouldn’t have told me about the gene mutation at all.”

Dr. David might not be as skilled as Lottie, but he’d worked on gene mutation cases before and now had access to the research institute’s data. He was more than qualified to run an exam for Lottie. Anthony needed to know exactly what was going on with Charlotte’s health.

“But Dr. David’s loyal to Charlotte. If we bring him to Imperial Heights, she’ll hear about it. What if…”

What if Charlotte tipped him off? Then the exam would be pointless.

Anthony turned, his face shadowed, eyes cold. “Do you really need me to spell out how to invite him without making a mess of things?”

“Hang on, let me grab my phone.”

He figured it must be something important and didn’t think twice. He grabbed his phone and followed them. When he stepped into the garage and saw it was empty, his heart skipped. He turned, ready to leave.

In the next instant, two bodyguards grabbed his arms.

The lead guard spoke politely. “Sorry, Dr. David. Anthony’s orders. We need to bring you to Imperial Heights.”

Dr. David froze for a couple of seconds, then it all made sense. This was about Lottie. The gene mutation thing. They wanted to catch him off guard for an exam.

He got bundled into a car, bodyguards sliding in on either side, making sure he couldn’t go anywhere.

Dr. David rolled his eyes to the ceiling, grumbling under his breath, “Just wait till I tell Charlotte about this. Anthony’s going to owe her a huge apology.”

The bodyguards didn’t say a word.
