The Mocked Miss’s Hidden Crowns novel Chapter 1044

“I know.” Nora’s voice trembled with emotion as she blinked hard, trying not to cry. “Nothing’s changed.”

It felt just like coming home from school, like everything was still the same.

“Time for your medicine,” Charlotte said softly.

She helped Nora lie down, tucked her in with the blanket, and brought over a glass of water for her pills. Once Nora finished, Charlotte gently dabbed away a bit of water from her mother’s lips with a tissue.

The whole time, worry was written all over her face.

Everyone in the family was thrilled about the reunion. Everyone except her. And Anthony.

“Lottie.”

Nora noticed how distant Charlotte seemed, so she forced herself to smile and reached out, stroking her daughter’s cheek. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. Mom’s going to be okay.”

Charlotte glanced at her, silent, her eyes full of sadness.

“Lottie…”

Nora pulled her in for a hug, patting her back in a way that felt lighter than usual. “I believe in you. You’re going to find the cure.”

Did she really believe that?

Charlotte pressed her lips together, staring out the window. Something deep down told her that her mom had come back just to see Grandpa and everyone else one last time.

That thought made her clutch her mother’s shirt and bury her face in Nora’s shoulder. Her voice came out rough and shaky. “Trust me. I can do it!”

She couldn’t let anything happen to her mom.

After giving Nora her acupuncture treatment, Charlotte waited until she was asleep before slipping out of the room.

He shrugged off his coat and hurried to her side, wrapping it around her and pulling her close.

He didn’t say anything. He didn’t need to. He just held her.

Lottie was only nineteen. Still so young. She was carrying so much all by herself.

“Anthony…”

Charlotte let her chin rest on his shoulder, soaking in his warmth. Her lashes fluttered and her lips were pale as she whispered, “I can’t find the cure… What am I supposed to do?”

Her voice was so low and raw it hurt to hear.

Anthony had no words. He just held her tighter.

Charlotte clung to his arm and buried her face in his chest, her voice thick with fear. “Am I going to lose my mom again?”
