She was talented, no doubt about it, but this was still new territory for her. Could she really pull off this surgery?
Worry flickered across everyone’s face.
“Hello.” Charlotte took off her mask, her face calm and unreadable.
“Hello.” The department head nodded at her, then hesitated. He couldn’t keep quiet. He started to weigh the pros and cons out loud, suggesting they stick with a conservative approach. If the surgery failed and something happened to the patient, Charlotte would be the one held accountable.
“Thank you for looking out for me.” Charlotte smiled, steady and sure.
She didn’t need to say it outright. She was going to do the surgery.
No one else argued.
When the conversation ended, Charlotte made her way to Hamlin’s bedside. She read out the consent form to him and his wife.
“There’s a seventy percent chance this will work,” she said, her tone serious. “I’m confident, but a lot can happen during surgery. There’s always a risk something could go wrong…”
“Will he die?” Zoe’s face turned pale. She started to panic. The other doctors said Hamlin could live another year or two with conservative treatment. But if the surgery went badly…
“I don’t want to do it.” Zoe finally shook her head. “It’s just too risky.”
Morton stood quietly next to the bed, his bright dark eyes darting between his dad and Charlotte. He hesitated, then spoke up. “I believe in Charlotte.”
Charlotte glanced his way.
“Charlotte can do anything. She’s incredible!” Morton’s face lit up with pure faith. “If she says Dad will get better, I believe her!”
“I want the surgery,” Hamlin said, managing a small smile. He knew his own condition better than anyone. Conservative treatment just meant spending money with no real hope. If the surgery worked, that would be best. If it didn’t, at least his family wouldn’t have to keep watching him suffer.
“Hamlin…” Zoe realized she couldn’t change his mind. She wiped her tears, signed the consent form, and tried to steady herself.
“Let’s get him ready for surgery.” Charlotte gave the consent papers to a nurse, then leaned down and gently pinched Morton’s chilly cheek. She smiled. “Wait for us to come back, okay?”
Morton nodded and, without a word, wrapped his arms around Charlotte in a quick, heartfelt hug. “Thank you, Charlotte. You work so hard.”
