They’d all come ready to confront Anthony, but instead, life had thrown them a jaw-dropping surprise.
No one in the family could remember anyone having twins in at least a hundred years. It was a huge deal, and for a moment, the room buzzed with shock.
“You idiot, get on your knees.” Patricia was the first to regain her senses. Sure, welcoming new life into the family was a big deal, but she knew this kind of news could seriously affect Lottie, especially now.
Leaning hard on her cane, Patricia rapped it on the floor. Her voice was sharp and full of command. “Get on your knees and apologize. Now.”
She had warned Anthony so many times, yet here they were. If he didn’t make this right, the Gates family might actually have to break his legs, just like they always threatened.
The sound of her voice snapped Anthony out of his daze. He didn’t kneel right away, though. Instead, he picked up the stack of medical reports, his whole face serious as he lowered his head. “Grandpa, Grandma, I need to take Lottie upstairs for a bit. Whatever punishment you decide on later, I’ll accept it.”
Before anyone could react, Anthony took Charlotte’s hand and hurried up the stairs, moving a little too fast, like he was desperate to get away.
Patricia’s heart skipped a beat. “Slow down,” she called, still shaken. She looked at the others, worry etched on her face. “They’re not going to start fighting, are they?”
Lavinia let out a cold laugh. “I hope they do. Lottie should beat some sense into him.”
Nora stayed silent, her mind whirling.
Lottie was really pregnant. And with twins.
Twins weren’t just rare in her family; they felt like a once-in-a-lifetime blessing. How could he just ask her to let them go?
Anthony hesitated. It was clear this hurt him too. These were their babies, the ones he’d secretly dreamed about ever since he fell in love with her. His voice was rough. “Your genetic mutation still isn’t under control. If we keep the babies, it could get in the way of your treatment.”
Charlotte gently pulled her hand back, eyes dropping to her lap. Her face was shadowed, her mood heavy. “So if I don’t have the babies, suddenly everything’s fine?”
Anthony didn’t know what to say.
Charlotte hugged her pillow tighter for a moment, then tossed it aside and stood up, turning away from him. Her voice was cold. “The babies are part of me. If I can survive this, so can they. Don’t even think about touching them.”
