Anthony smiled and made his way over to Charlotte, settling down beside her. He slid his arm around her waist, the gesture already second nature. His hand hovered carefully over her belly, as if afraid to press too hard. “Can we tell yet if it’s a boy or a girl?” His voice was gentle, almost hopeful.

“They’re still too small. Give it another couple of months,” Charlotte replied, turning to look at him. She couldn’t help teasing, “So, do you want a son or a daughter?”

“Either’s okay, as long as it’s yours,” Anthony said. He swallowed, trying to look serious, but his eyes gave him away. “Honestly, I’d love a daughter, but I think I’m hoping for a son.”

Charlotte blinked at him. “Oh?”

“Sons don’t inherit the gene mutation,” Anthony murmured, holding her close and pressing a soft kiss to the corner of her mouth. “I could never let a daughter go through what you did.”

He’d once dreamed of raising a little “Lottie,” to give her the childhood she’d missed out on. But in the end, whether they had sons or daughters wasn’t something he could control.

When Anthony walked in looking perfectly fine, Lavinia’s face fell in disappointment. “Lottie didn’t hit him? He got off way too easy.”

“Anthony’s not the reckless type. Maybe it really was an accident,” Matthew tried to comfort her in a low voice.

“An accident?” Lavinia scoffed, lowering her voice. “Isn’t that exactly what you told me back then?” Truth was, he’d secretly poked holes in who knows how many condoms just to trap her.
