When Dr. David saw the two of them walk in, his face changed a little and he started to speak.
“Stop right there,” Charlotte cut in, sounding impatient. “I’m not hungry, I’m not thirsty, I feel fine, and the babies are doing great. Any other questions?”
Dr. David froze, glancing at Charlotte’s calm face and then at Anthony, who looked like he wished he could disappear. It didn’t take much to figure out what had happened. He never thought Anthony would lose his cool like this.
“No,” Dr. David said, shaking his head awkwardly. He quickly switched topics. “The test results on that formula from the bracelet are in. It doesn’t look good.”
Charlotte’s eyes went cold. She pulled on her protective suit, snapped on gloves, and adjusted her mask. Anthony followed her as they trailed behind Dr. David into the main lab.
The place was huge, with two giant machines that probably cost more than a city block. Thick blackout curtains kept any sunlight out, protecting the formula inside.
“This way,” Dr. David said. He flicked on the lights and checked Charlotte’s gear, making sure everything was sealed tight. “The formula’s over here, in the machine on the left. After processing, it turned dangerously corrosive, so be extra careful handling it.”
Charlotte stepped up to the machine and picked up a clear test tube from the table. Under the light, the liquid inside was fizzing with tiny bubbles. Only a formula that had lost its strength would react like that.
“It’s lost a lot of its punch. The bracelet must have cracked ages ago,” Dr. David said quietly.
“Is there anything you can do to fix it?” Anthony asked, his face tense.
“It’s going to be tough,” Dr. David replied, watching Charlotte for her reaction. He frowned but added, “But it’s not a total loss.”
Charlotte looked at them, her eyes sharp. She focused on Dr. David. “How do you know there’s a test subject?”
She hadn’t even told him about Mr. Churchill yet.
“I…” Dr. David’s face tightened as he realized he’d slipped up. He stumbled over his words, clearly nervous. There was no way he could admit the test subject he meant was actually Anthony. If Charlotte ever found out he and Anthony had been working together on something this risky, she’d lose it.
“It was me. I told him,” Anthony said, breaking the tension in the room. “I mentioned Mr. Churchill on a call.”
“That’s right,” Dr. David said, wiping sweat from his forehead and letting out a shaky breath. Still, he couldn’t help feeling confused. If Mr. Churchill was the mutated subject, then why would Anthony need to volunteer?
