No one could believe it. Charlotte had figured it out in no time.
“I added thirty times the usual amount of catalyst to this batch,” she said, her voice calm as ever. “For most people, the genetic mutation symptoms would kick in three days after the injection.”
Charlotte barely glanced at Damaris, who was staring at her, eyes wide with terror and hate. “You’ve seen what Newell goes through when his mutation hits, haven’t you?”
The memories slammed into Damaris, unwanted and vivid. Little Newell, barely six years old, huddled on the sofa, pale as a ghost, his eyes brimming with tears. He didn’t scream or cry. He just kept calling out, “Mama… Mama…”
It was only later that Damaris learned the truth. Nothing could ease those symptoms. Every episode was like every tendon in his body being pulled tight, the pain so sharp it felt like his limbs were being twisted backward. No child should have to endure that. Most adults couldn’t, either.
And every time she’d seen Newell suffering, the pain twisting his face, something cold and bitter flickered in her own eyes.
“Damaris.” Charlotte’s voice was sharp, pulling her out of her spiraling thoughts. “Losing the person you loved was a tragedy. But that doesn’t give you the right to take it out on your son.”
Charlotte’s lips curled into a cold, mocking smile as she leaned forward, her gaze fixed on Damaris. “If he made a mistake, it was only that he was born your son.”
Damaris’s lashes trembled. Her hands clenched tight in her lap.
“Damaris, if your husband could see what you’ve done… If he knew that after he died, you spent over twenty years torturing the son he adored…”
Just mentioning it sent Damaris’s breathing into overdrive. She looked like she might shatter.
