As soon as the host’s voice rang out, Emily finally let herself breathe. Her shoulders relaxed a little, but her hands stayed clenched at her sides. She had never faced this many flashing cameras in her life. Every click and pop made her heart slam even harder in her chest.

And right next to her was Kenneth. The Kenneth. The same Kenneth she’d been quietly crushing on for months.

Out of nowhere, she felt Kenneth’s eyes on her. She must have been staring, because he shifted a little closer, leaned in, and caught her gaze with that ridiculously soft look he’d perfected. His mouth curved, teasing. “You still trying to sneak glances at me?”

“I wasn’t!” Emily squeaked, but her voice barely carried. She tore her eyes away, cheeks burning.

Kenneth’s eyebrow shot up and he grinned, mischief practically sparkling in his eyes. “No need to sneak. You’re not exactly being subtle.”

She muttered, “You’re so full of yourself.” The words tumbled out under her breath, flustered.

He looked for a second like he was about to reach out and poke her cheek, but stopped himself, just shaking his head. Adorable.

For a brief moment, they stood together and waited while Sabina took her photos. It was almost peaceful… until a voice cut through the noise.

“Emily, your gown looks a little familiar, doesn’t it?”

Emily blinked and turned. “Well… It’s a popular brand.”

She hadn’t planned to call attention to it. She thought the look was enough on its own.
