Emily hadn’t expected herself to be so honest about it.

“So, Emily...” Jarrod was quiet for a long moment, trying to steady his voice. “You’ve really liked Kenneth for six years?”

Six years? He was counting from when Kenneth started his career.

“No.” Emily thought it over, shook her head, and before Jarrod could say anything, she clarified, “It’s been at least ten years.”

“Ten years?” Jarrod just stared, completely thrown off by the answer. His face, which had already looked grim, lost all color. That meant Emily had started falling for Kenneth when she was just a teenager.

“So you got into the entertainment industry, signed with Apex Mediaworks... all to stay close to Kenneth, didn’t you?”

Emily let a small smile slip, her eyes narrowing a little. The last time they worked together, she already knew Jarrod was pretty sharp, but this was more than she expected.

She didn’t bother to answer outright, and the silence was pretty much confirmation.

“If that’s true...” Jarrod guessed her answer, and though he tried to hide how disappointed he was, there was no hiding the rough edge in his voice. “Emily, why didn’t you ever tell Kenneth?”

All those things she’d done for him behind the scenes. Standing by his side from the time he was unknown, to now, when he was center stage. All that pain and heartache—he should know.

“He treats you so badly sometimes. He’s just not the kind of guy who deserves someone loving him that long.”

“Emily...”

“Jarrod.”

Emily saw the way his emotions were spiraling, so she interrupted him gently but firmly. “This is between Kenneth and me.”

“I get it.” Jarrod lowered his head, his whole energy deflated. He murmured, “I just wish I’d met you sooner. If I had, I would have gotten to you before Kenneth ever did.”

Emily froze, absorbing the confession. It took her a couple minutes to process what he meant. “Jarrod, you’ve only ever been like a little brother to me.”

A little brother? That wasn’t what anyone wanted to hear.

“Emily, are you happy with Kenneth?” Jarrod’s voice dropped to a whisper.

Emily didn’t even hesitate. She nodded. “Really happy.”
