“A couple? For real?”

Emily blinked, glancing down at their hands wound together. Her heart fluttered with this new, sweet kind of nervousness.

“Here, your hat.” Kenneth picked up a baseball cap and fit it snugly over her head. He tugged her mask into place, his voice soft but steady. “Just stay close, okay? Nothing to worry about.”

Once he was sure their disguises were in place, he wrapped his fingers around hers and guided her out of the car.

They tried to blend in, but with their height and the way they carried themselves, it was impossible not to stand out. People kept sneaking looks at them as they walked by, curious and a little star-struck.

Knox, trailing a few steps behind, felt a headache brewing just from watching them.

The amusement park stretched out in every direction, loud and bright. Kenneth remembered Emily was still recovering and didn’t want her overdoing it. Most of the big rides were a no-go, so they stuck to the easy stuff. Even without all the thrills, Emily’s mood was light and cheerful.

“Emily, sit here for a minute. Don’t wander around, okay?” Kenneth had her settle on a wooden bench and made sure her mask was straight.

He slipped away for a second. When he came back, he had a fluffy bunny-ear headband hanging from one wrist, a huge puff of cotton candy in his hand, and a red heart-shaped balloon bobbing above him. He looked a little ridiculous, and Emily couldn’t help grinning.

Kenneth eased the balloon and the cotton candy into her hands, then gently slipped the bunny ears onto her head. “First date rules. Gotta do it right,” he said.

He bent down so their faces were level, grinning mischievously. “Who’s this cute girl? Oh, right, mine.”

She caught her own reflection in the glass nearby and felt a jolt of nerves, her heart racing. Before she could say anything, Kenneth leaned in closer.

“So, do you like it?” he asked, suddenly a bit unsure.
