Charlotte scrolled through her phone and absentmindedly tapped her fingers on the table, lost in her own world.
Something just didn’t feel right.
Was Andrew really going to confess to Shirley? That couldn’t be it… He didn’t have that kind of courage, did he? And even if he did, why was she the one worrying about it? If that wasn’t it, then what was going on?
Just as Charlotte sank deeper into her thoughts, someone knocked at the door. Glenn strolled in with a big grin.
“Charlotte, everything’s been set up, just like you asked. The other professors and students are all in the observation room, waiting for you.”
Everyone at the med school—students and professors alike—was waiting, practically bouncing with anticipation.
Charlotte nodded, but her mind was completely elsewhere. Right now, all she could think about was Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
…
By eight that night, Charlotte finally wrapped things up in the lab. She was totally wiped from working all day.
The minute she stepped out, her friends by the door all jumped to their feet.
“Charlotte, let’s go.”
“Does it have to be today?” she asked, tossing her bag at Andrew and stretching her arms as she stifled a yawn. “Can’t we do it another time?”
“It has to be tonight,” all four of them insisted, almost in perfect sync.
Charlotte picked up on the weird energy immediately. She paused, then slowly looked up. Her cold gaze swept across the group, and her eyes narrowed a bit.
The atmosphere shifted right away. Everyone tensed up, their hands clenched tight. Nobody dared to meet her stare.
“We reserved the whole place. It’d be awkward if we didn’t go,” Andrew said, trying way too hard to act normal. He looked like he was desperate not to mess something up.
“We’re just grabbing barbecue?” Charlotte slipped her hands in her pockets, her eyes downright piercing. “Nothing else happening?”
“What could we be doing?” Andrew shot back.
“Yeah, nothing’s up!” Shirley chimed in right away.
“Really, just barbecue,” Parrish added, nodding way too quickly.
…
About twenty minutes later, they arrived at their destination.
The barbecue spot was right next to the biggest stretch of ocean in Cabinda. The location was something special—right in the center of town, with the city wrapping all around them.
From above, it looked like a moon surrounded by stars. It was pretty spectacular.
That was probably why the area was so developed. It had turned into one of Cabinda’s hottest vacation spots.
Maybe because they’d rented out the whole place, it was bright and lively, but there weren’t many people around.
Charlotte kept her hands tucked in her pockets as she looked around, eyebrows drawn together in a thoughtful frown.
Maybe she was just overthinking everything.
“Hey, we’ll take fifty lamb skewers, thirty beef, and I’ll have a glass of warm water…”
