"Andrew, I've told you already. There's no way it's going to work between us."
Shirley strode ahead, her backpack hanging from one shoulder, her steps quick and determined.
"I've said what I needed to say, too."
Andrew trailed a few paces behind, hands stuffed in his pockets. With those long legs, it only took a few strides for him to keep up with her.
"It's fine if you don't like me. I like you and that's enough."
Andrew stepped in closer, reaching out to lift the backpack off Shirley's shoulder. "This thing's heavy. Let me carry it for you," he said, chuckling softly.
When they reached a quieter corner, Shirley came to a halt. Her eyes, bright and serious, searched Andrew's face as she asked, "I'm not pretty. My personality kind of sucks. My family's nothing special, honestly. There are so many amazing girls out there. Andrew, why would you like me?"
That was the one thing she still didn't understand.
Andrew ran a hand through his hair, a frown creasing his features. His voice came out low and a little rough, "I've asked myself that, too. Why do I like you?"
"And?" Shirley pressed, her fingers twisting together.
"I don't know." Andrew let out a quiet sigh, sounding a little down. "How it happened doesn't matter. All I know is... I like you."
Who could ever explain why people fall for each other? Feelings never made sense like that.
Shirley just stood there, completely stumped, letting silence fill the space between them. For a second, she even wondered if she should say something truly cruel, find the most direct way to make him give up.
