The Mocked Miss’s Hidden Crowns novel Chapter 1660

“So…” Dorothy paused and took the small purse the housekeeper handed her. She pulled out a bank card and slid it toward Shirley, her voice icy. “There’s two million dollars on there. That’s enough for you and your grandmother to live better.”

“Two million…” Shirley repeated softly, a hint of a laugh slipping from her lips. She had been quiet until now.

“What’s funny?” Dorothy leaned back in her chair. The smile she wore moments ago vanished, replaced by sharp irritation. “You think it’s not enough?” Her words came out cold.

“It is a little cheap,” Shirley replied, still standing by the table with her hands relaxed in front of her. A light laugh escaped her again.

Dorothy’s face changed in an instant. It was all there, that look of contempt and ridicule. She’d always said it—girls from Shirley’s background were just after money. Wasn’t it obvious? Who could live on love alone?

“Don’t be greedy,” Dorothy sneered. “Most people will never even see two million in their whole lives.” Her pleasant mask dropped completely. “The only reason you’re getting that much is because I am generous. If it weren’t for Andrew, honestly… You wouldn’t even get two hundred from me.”

On the floor below, the party was alive with noise, full of laughter and music. But up here, the air felt heavy and the silence almost suffocating.

“You should take the money and leave now, if you’re smart. Or else…” Dorothy’s confidence only grew, convinced Shirley wouldn’t dare talk back.

“Or else what?” Shirley asked, her voice suddenly stronger, not soft and timid like before.
