All she had done was offhandedly mention that she wasn’t feeling well, and now here he was, showing up in the middle of the night just to bring her medicine. For a second, Shirley’s emotions tangled up inside her, heavy and hard to sort out. She couldn’t pretend she wasn’t touched. Besides her grandma and Charlotte, no one in the world treated her half as kindly as Andrew did.

But then, just as quickly, the memory of his mother’s face flashed in her mind. It felt like having ice water dumped all over her, every bit of hope instantly snuffed out. There was no way to avoid him at Cabinda. Her best option now was to get herself to Apex, and fast. Two months, maybe less. After she left, Andrew would move on and forget about her. Everything would be over.

Clutching the medicine in her arms, Shirley wiped the dampness from the corner of her eye and whispered, hardly more than a sigh, “Don’t be so nice to me.” She didn’t know how much longer she could keep herself together.

Across campus, Pandora had just finished evening classes and was stepping outside when she noticed Andrew walking by with his hands jammed in his pockets, that annoyingly bright smile still on his face.

“Pandora, isn’t that your future boyfriend?” her friend, who was always done up in heavy makeup, pointed him out instantly. “Pretty sure he just left the physics department. He must’ve gone to see Shirley again.”

Pandora’s eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint in them. She didn’t bother answering. It was obvious enough—he hadn’t even tried to hide it.

“He doesn’t even care who sees him. Just waltzing into Cabinda to visit her…” The girl gave Pandora a sideways look, clearly noticing how foul her mood was. “Do you think he wants to make things official with her or something?”

Go public? The thought made Pandora grit her teeth. She snorted softly, “Apparently Shirley didn’t take Dorothy’s warning seriously.”
