The Mocked Miss’s Hidden Crowns novel Chapter 1709

Patricia had called Dorothy out in front of Shirley, leaving Dorothy humiliated and fuming. She stormed back to her room, slamming the door so hard the walls seemed to shake.

Daniel had just gotten home. He was loosening his tie when he saw his wife pacing, clearly furious. His brow creased slightly. “I met that girl earlier. She looks sweet and polite. Seems like she’d be easy to get along with. Plus, Patricia likes her, and Patricia’s got good instincts. Honestly, I don’t see any problem with Andrew dating her.”

Dorothy glared at him from the couch, her hands balled into tight fists. “What do you know?” she snapped. “She isn’t even officially part of the family yet, but she’s already trying to win everyone over.”

“If she actually marries Andrew, am I supposed to just disappear or something?” The more she talked, the more upset she became. Her voice was tight with resentment. “All this time, I thought she was just a nobody who only cared about money. I didn’t think she could stir up this much trouble. Clearly, I underestimated her.”

Worse still, even her own husband was defending Shirley now. Dorothy’s frustration was bubbling over.

Daniel shot his wife a long look, his frown deepening. “Kids have to live their own lives.”

“That’s just like you,” Dorothy spat, suddenly rising to her feet, eyes glistening with angry tears. “I don’t have any say with your mother, or with Charlotte. What’s next? Am I supposed to cater to my daughter-in-law too? I could maybe accept it if she was from some big, fancy family. But Shirley? A girl with nothing to her name? And she expects to boss me around?”

She stared at Daniel, her voice trembling. “I’m your wife. I’ve been doing everything I can for this family, for our son’s future, for us. How can you take someone else’s side? Have you got any conscience left?”

Daniel stilled, his hands frozen on his shirt buttons. He looked weary, the lines around his eyes releasing a deep frustration and exhaustion he couldn’t quite hide. He turned toward Dorothy, voice low and rough. “Didn’t you get enough trouble from the Byron family mess? Let it go, Dorothy. Please, stop.”

“You—” she began heatedly.

“That’s enough.” Daniel put his fingers to his brow, closing his eyes for a second. His voice was hoarse. “You can sleep here. I’m working in the study tonight.”

Before Dorothy could answer, Daniel had already walked out, leaving the door swinging shut behind him.

“Daniel!” she shouted at the closed door. But he was gone.
