“Wait for me in the next room.”
Charlotte snapped out of it and quickly put some distance between herself and Anthony. He lowered his voice, all gentle and coaxing. “Be good, I’ll just be a minute.”
He disappeared into the bathroom. Soon after, the sound of running water echoed through the suite.
Charlotte smiled to herself and wandered next door.
A few minutes later, Hans knocked on the door with the caution of someone visiting a haunted house. His face looked terrible. “Charlotte,” he greeted politely.
“Yeah?” Charlotte looked him up and down, relaxed, almost amused. “Something up?”
“Yes, actually.” Hans stood there, practically shrinking into himself, head lowered. He spoke in an earnest rush. “What happened tonight was the secretary office’s fault. They dropped the ball, and that woman found her chance to get close to Mr. Sterling.”
“You don’t need to worry. Mr. Sterling only has eyes for you. I’ve been by his side for more than ten years. Forget getting close to other women, he doesn’t even let one come near him.”
“Really, don’t hold this against him. You’re the only one in his world… His computer, desk, even his drawers are full of your photos. When he isn’t in meetings or signing papers, he just sits there, staring at pictures of you—daydreaming.”
Charlotte blinked, needing a beat to process that. The image of Anthony zoning out over her photos all day was so absurd she almost laughed.
Fifteen minutes later, Anthony emerged with fresh clothes and damp hair, pushing open the adjoining door.
He found her standing with her back to him, silhouetted at the big window, looking out at the sparkling city lights.
