The test results came in. No sign of anything unusual with her cells, so they could rule out sleep disorder syndrome. Still, a few other numbers were rising.

Anthony stared at the report, deep in thought. He was pretty sure he’d seen these markers before. They had something to do with gene mutations.

“Your kid’s got some serious survival skills.”

Charlotte had somehow appeared behind him without a sound. She leaned on the desk, glanced at the screen, and gave him a little smirk. “Feel better now?”

As she pulled her hand back, her finger brushed against the back button. The browser blinked away from the report, and suddenly, Anthony’s will popped up on the monitor.

So that was why he’d been acting so secretive. He must have thought he was sick, maybe even dying, and had actually planned to drag her along with him? Is that why he wrote this?

“What do those numbers mean?” Charlotte crunched on a peeled apple as she spoke. She didn’t look the least bit worried.

Anthony clicked open the report again, then pulled Charlotte into his lap, his arms resting around her waist. His voice dropped. “Just... want to be sure.”

“It means the mutation hasn’t totally healed yet. That’s it.” Charlotte kept swinging her legs, nibbling at her apple like it was just another day.

Anthony didn’t say anything for a while. He knew what those numbers meant—signs her genetic mutation still hadn’t cleared up. But it’d been months since she took the antidote. There shouldn’t still be this much.

Unless the antidote hadn’t worked at all. Or maybe something else was slowing it down.

As he thought about it, his eyes drifted to her belly. His expression tightened. Could it be because of the twins?

She hadn’t been able to take the new antidote back then, all because she was pregnant.

“We’ve almost figured out the cause of the sleep syndrome and things are finally under control.” Anthony massaged her lower back gently and spoke softly. “Let’s head home, okay?”
