Charlotte was dragged into the lab to tinker with a newly developed piece of equipment.
"How has Shirley been doing lately?" Charlotte asked, her fingers flying across the keyboard with practiced ease as a faint smile touched her lips.
"She's much more hardworking than I expected." Mr. Lane stared unblinkingly at the machine, visibly in high spirits. "She actually analyzed all the preliminary data for this device.
With a little more experience under her belt, she's going to achieve great things."
Charlotte hit the switch. The data Mr. Lane had been agonizing over for days finally appeared flawlessly on the monitor. "Once this semester ends, arrange for her to go to Apex."
"In her sophomore year?"
Mr. Lane frowned, a wave of disappointment washing over him. "She'll be gone for two whole years. You're killing me here."
It had been incredibly difficult to find a competent assistant.
"How about this..."
Mr. Lane pressed his lips together and looked up at Charlotte, a new scheme forming in his mind. "I heard the medical school wants to hire you as a mentor for their traditional medicine class.
Since you'll be coming to The Cabinda University to teach those kids anyway, why don't you spare some time to give our class a few lectures too?"
"It's two o'clock. I just remembered I have somewhere to be."
Charlotte stood up, pulled the brim of her baseball cap down, and kept her expression perfectly blank. "I'm heading out. I'll drop by to see you another day."
"Hey!"
Mr. Lane hurriedly jumped up and chased after her, but he couldn't keep up. Panting, he glared at her retreating back and huffed, "Charlotte, did you hear a word I just said?"
"Whatever the medical school is offering, I can match it."
"No, wait. I can do ten times better."
"Charlotte..."
His only response was the howling wind and absolute, awkward silence.
Just then, a student arrived to drop off some documents and caught the tail end of Mr. Lane's shouting.
"Mr. Lane, I don't think Charlotte is going to be the mentor for the traditional medicine class."
What a load of crap.
He scoffed.
Mr. Lane's expression darkened. He pointed accusingly toward the medical school and snapped, "The medical school would need a miracle to land Charlotte as a mentor anyway."
"So what if it's Asclepius? Charlotte's medical expertise isn't necessarily any lower than hers."
"Those blind fools at the medical school have lost their minds. They wouldn't know a gem if it hit them in the face."
"If they don't want her, perfect. Having Charlotte in the physics department is exactly what I want."
However...
Even though he wasn't in the medical field, he knew a bit about Asclepius.
The figure had always been incredibly mysterious. Age, gender, nationality—everything was completely classified.
Would Charlotte end up getting the short end of the stick?
