After a long silence, Stella noticed the medication on her nightstand. She measured out the correct dose into her palm. It was the first time she had taken her pills willingly.
Outside the apartment complex, Roger stood hidden beneath the shadow of a massive tree. Dressed in a black trench coat, his tall frame looked desolate. He hadn't shaved in days, and the rough stubble along his jaw only deepened his exhausted, defeated appearance.
"Is she awake?" Roger asked in a gravelly voice when Charlotte approached.
"Yeah." Charlotte smiled faintly. "Samantha's talk really got through to her, especially when she mentioned what you've been doing. She finally spoke, and she took her meds on her own. It's a good sign."
Roger stared up at the dark, closed window for a long time. "Has she ever been angry?"
"What?"
Charlotte didn't follow.
"When she gets furious, what does she do? How long does it take to calm her down?" he asked, offering no context.
Charlotte frowned, mulling it over. "I don't know. She's never been mad at me."
Roger looked away, a bitter smile touching his lips. "It's about time. I want to be with her."
Charlotte eyed him suspiciously. Was that all he wanted? The question felt loaded, like he was plotting something.
"Tonight, then," Charlotte said, focusing on the immediate goal of getting Stella to open up. She paused. "But we'll need to force her hand."
Charlotte's idea of forcing her hand involved having Anthony orchestrate a massive artificial downpour right where Roger was standing.
"You think this will work?" Anthony asked, feeding Charlotte a piece of fruit as he watched the drenched man standing in the downpour. It wasn't the first time they had used the sympathy card.
