"Call the police!"
Everlot’s voice rose above the noise, sharp and clear.
Call the police?
The room went quiet as everyone took in his words. Most of the students glanced at Stella, their eyes full of sympathy. It didn’t matter if she meant to do it or not. Janie was hurt. If Stella couldn’t prove she was innocent, everyone would blame her.
“Charlotte!”
Andrew and the others looked rattled, their gazes snapping to Charlotte. They knew exactly what calling the police meant. The Adams family would show up for sure. Stella was just starting to get better. The last thing she needed was to deal with those people again.
“The coach gets the final say. If he wants to call the police, then that’s what we’re doing,” Charlotte said, brushing some dirt from Stella’s clothes like it was no big deal.
Janie looked even more smug than before. Of course the coach had the last word. What could Charlotte do about it?
Olivia glanced up, her lips curling into a mocking smile.
Before anyone could say more, Everlot’s phone rang.
“Assault is a criminal offense,” Everlot said into the phone, his cold eyes locked on Janie. “So is slander. You sure you want to go through with this?”
“Absolutely!” Janie clung to the chance. “I almost died. I deserve justice!”
Anthony gave her a long, steady look. “Send a car up here.”
He turned to the group. “Charlotte, Stella, and...” His eyes landed on Janie, chilling. “Her. The rest of you, keep moving.”
“Charlotte, are you going to be okay?” Andrew asked, voice tight with worry.
“There’ll be trouble,” Charlotte answered, a little smirk playing at her lips. “But Stella’s not the one who needs to worry.”
That was all the reassurance they needed. After offering Stella a few quiet words, they followed the others down the trail.
When it was Stella’s turn for questions, she just said coolly, “My mom’s dead. I don’t have family.”
Donald was in charge of the whole process himself. He hadn’t been there in person, but he’d watched everything from the surveillance room. He knew exactly what had happened.
“Both her arm and leg are fractured,” the doctor said after checking Janie over. “Her hand especially. If it had been any worse, the damage would’ve been permanent.”
Janie got agitated right away and turned to the police. “Officer, it was her! She pushed me! If I hadn’t been lucky, I’d be dead by now!”
The police had already reviewed the surveillance footage before they arrived. Hearing Janie’s story, they frowned.
Why was she making things up?
“The cameras—”
“Janie!”
