“Letty’s back too?”
The moment someone said it, everyone at the arrivals gate—reporters, fans, just about anyone waiting—turned to look. There was Letty, dragging two huge suitcases behind her, looking like she’d rather melt into the floor than be seen.
“It’s really her!”
As soon as they recognized her, the reporters spun around with their cameras and rushed straight for Letty, shouting her name and shoving microphones in her face.
Meanwhile, with the attention off them, Andrew and the rest ran up to Charlotte.
“Welcome back!” Andrew grinned, practically bouncing with excitement.
“Welcome, welcome!” Shirley chimed in, thrusting a bouquet into Charlotte’s arms before leaping up to hug her tight. “Charlotte, you’re incredible!”
“Do you know your win is all over the news in Eldoria? Seriously, you’re everywhere.”
“Really?” Charlotte’s smile was soft, just a hint of pride in her eyes. As soon as Shirley let go, Stella stepped forward, her smile bright and gentle. “Congratulations, Charlotte,” she said quietly.
Then Stella’s gaze dropped to Charlotte’s hand. Her eyes grew misty as she asked, “Is it bad?”
Charlotte lifted her hand, wiggling her fingers with a small grin. “I’m okay. See? I can move it.”
“But it’s still so swollen,” Stella murmured, gently brushing her fingers over the injury. She glanced over at Letty, who was now completely swarmed by reporters.
Even if Letty hadn’t played a direct part in what happened, she had to have known. Stella’s eyes went cold as she watched her, anger simmering just below the surface. If Charlotte’s hand hadn’t been able to heal, nothing they could do to Letty would have been enough.
“How are you going to explain this to The Cabinda University?”
The university had invested years and plenty of money into her, but now their star student was gone and their reputation was trashed.
Letty squeezed her eyes shut, hands clamped over her ears as the questions turned into accusations. The same crowd who had cheered her on at the airport, promised to make her a star, were now tearing her apart.
If it hadn’t been for Charlotte, Letty would’ve come home a hero. People would’ve admired her, not looked at her like this. Watching Charlotte walk away surrounded by friends, Letty’s hands curled into fists. Hatred burned in her eyes as she screamed.
“That’s enough! Leave me alone! All of you—”
She didn’t even get to finish. Out of nowhere, a water bottle came flying through the air and smacked her right in the face.
