Stella shot Roger a quick look, then slipped out of his arms. “Thanks.”
“That’s it? Just thanks?” Roger’s face tightened for a moment, but he quickly smoothed it over and pretended nothing was wrong.
Was he saying she was rude?
Stella froze, then realized what he meant. She bowed to him, earnest and a little awkward. “Thank you so much, Roger.”
Roger just stared at her, speechless.
Even Charlotte, who had been watching from the side, was at a loss for words.

In the car, Roger was driving. Charlotte and Stella were in the back seat.
“Do you have a lawyer in mind?” Roger asked as he started the Cayenne. He checked the rearview mirror, catching sight of the two girls. One lounged with her legs crossed, totally relaxed. The other sat perfectly straight, hands folded in her lap.
“This goes back five years,” Charlotte said. “Plus, there’s no surveillance at the scene this time. Letty might use that gap to twist things and claim it was just an accident. She’ll probably try for a not-guilty verdict.”
Stella needed an experienced lawyer. Otherwise, she’d be at a disadvantage.
“If you don’t have anyone, I can—”
“No need.” Charlotte barely looked up from her phone, where she was chatting with Anthony. She arched a brow and sounded pretty chill. “We’ve already got someone.”
“You do?” Roger was surprised. “Are they reliable?”
They’d just left the hospital. He hadn’t seen her call anyone.
Charlotte paused, her thumb hovering over her screen. She glanced at Roger, a small, mysterious smile playing on her lips. “She’s got skills.”
“Who is it?”
“Questlaw.”
Roger’s foot hit the brake, and the car jerked. For once, he looked totally thrown, his usually calm face wide-eyed in disbelief.
Roger nodded and watched as Charlotte got into Anthony’s car. Once she was gone, he turned to Stella, who was staring down at her hands.
“You know Questlaw too?” Roger asked gently.
“Yes.” Stella answered right away. She never lied.
“Do you have her contact info? I want to check this out.”
The whole thing sounded crazy. He was worried Lottie was being scammed.
“Actually…” Stella pressed her lips together, fidgeting nervously. Her voice was barely above a whisper. “You don’t need to check.”
“What?” Roger asked, only half paying attention as he gripped the steering wheel.
“You don’t need to check.” Stella looked up at him, her eyes serious. “Charlotte is Questlaw.”
Roger slammed on the brakes again.
