After about thirty seconds, Charlotte lifted her head. A chill seemed to settle over her pale, beautiful face, her expression unreadable.
“Tell Anthony he can stop looking into Franco.”
She knew Anthony would come to the same conclusions she had. No point wasting time. Rolling up the lab report, she tossed it into the trash and shoved her hands into her pockets.
“Let’s go.”
Jackson and Adonis shared a look, then hurried after her.
…
That evening, Charlotte received an updated medical file from the institute. It still wasn’t complete, but it was much more detailed than before.
Without seeing the patient in person, Charlotte spent half an hour poring over the new records. She disappeared into her lab, reemerging a while later with several glass vials filled with a milky white solution. It was a short-term miracle drug she’d formulated, based on Franco’s wife’s latest medical charts.
“Get these to the presidential residence before midnight.”
Jackson took the vials, looking puzzled. “Charlotte, what’s in these? And why the strict deadline?”
“It’s a life-saving treatment,” she replied, checking the time. A faint smile touched her lips. “According to her test results, Franco’s wife is in real danger. If I’m right, she’ll start having trouble breathing around midnight.”
This medicine would help her survive the night.
“Got it.”
Franco didn’t believe Charlotte could actually help, and he wouldn’t even meet with her. Honestly, this was the perfect chance to prove what she could do.
Jackson didn’t ask any more questions. He grabbed the medicine and left for the presidential residence at once.
Charlotte was exhausted. She yawned, flopped onto the sofa, and muttered, “Let me know when someone from the residence gets here.”
…
The presidential residence was lit up, but the place was dead quiet.
“Mr. Hawk.”
The butler stepped into the study, carrying a small box. He bowed his head slightly. “A young lady sent this for Mrs. Hawk. She said Mrs. Hawk would need it tonight.”
Franco looked up from his computer. His eyes were tired and cold. “Tonight?”
The sudden crisis threw everyone into chaos.
“Get the defibrillator!”
“There’s no time!”
Her heart rate was gone. Zero.
“Nora…”
Watching her struggle for breath, watching the heart monitor flatline, Franco didn’t hesitate. He opened the vials and poured the medicine into her mouth. The doctors stared, helpless, as the unfamiliar liquid went down.
Not even thirty seconds passed before Nora’s heart rate started to climb again. Her breathing steadied. Color returned to her face.
“She’s okay… Mrs. Hawk is stable now,” one of the doctors breathed, shaky with relief. “Mr. Hawk, what did you just give her?”
Franco braced himself against the bed, looking at Nora, still weak and pale, but alive. His heart was pounding.
“Bring her to me. Now.”
