Outside the bedroom door, a cluster of doctors lined both sides of the hallway. Their faces were ghostly pale, and sweat still clung to their hairlines. Earlier that day, during the checkup, Franco’s wife had seemed completely fine. But right at midnight, her breathing suddenly failed.
The emergency hit fast and hard. Over a dozen doctors scrambled around her, almost losing her more than once. If Franco hadn’t pulled out the life-saving medication at the last second, things would have ended very differently.
Word had already spread about the young woman in front of them. She was the one who claimed she could save Mrs. Hawk. Not only had she predicted the sudden downturn, she had sent over the medicine ahead of time. Without those vials, Mrs. Hawk probably wouldn’t have made it.
As Charlotte stepped into view, every doctor—regardless of age—looked up. There was awe in their eyes, and just as much disbelief.
She was so young. Maybe not even twenty.
How could she possibly have figured out what would happen, let alone made the right medicine without even examining the patient? Was she some kind of miracle worker? For a second, someone wondered if she might actually be Asclepius. But that was ridiculous. Asclepius, whoever they really were, couldn’t possibly be a teenage girl.
So who was she?
“You two, wait outside.” Franco stopped in his tracks, turning to look at Jackson and Adonis trailing after Charlotte. His voice was sharp, leaving no room for argument.
Jackson’s eyes narrowed as he glared at Franco, his stare icy and full of warning.
Adonis’s face twisted with frustration. He tightened his grip on his gun. “Why should we?” Letting Charlotte go in alone was asking for trouble. What if Franco tried something?
The nearby bodyguards immediately tensed. Guns were raised and pointed straight at Adonis. Their eyes were cold and unblinking. “This is the Presidential Residence,” one of them snapped. “When Mr. Hawk gives an order, you follow it!”
Adonis glanced at Charlotte, anger practically radiating off him.
“You’re the one taking things too far,” Charlotte shot back, not backing down at all. She somehow managed to look fiercer than he did.
Franco’s usually elegant face twisted with anger. For a second, it looked like he might actually explode. You could almost see him wishing he could sew her mouth shut just to keep her quiet.
Everyone else just stared as the two of them argued, neither one willing to give an inch. For some reason, it was almost entertaining to watch.
“Mr. Hawk, Mrs. Hawk is still waiting inside,” the butler chimed in, stepping up with a polite but urgent tone. “And miss, because of her condition, Mrs. Hawk can’t risk being exposed to germs. Too many people could make things worse.”
Charlotte glanced at the butler, then threw Franco one last glare. Finally, she relented. “You two, stay out here.”
