Their eyes met, but neither of them said a word. The silence in the room felt almost suffocating, broken only by the steady beep of the heart monitor, each sound pounding in Nora’s chest like a drum.
“Lo…”
Nora’s eyelids fluttered as she tried to focus on the girl standing by her bed. Her lips moved, barely making a sound.
Lottie… Was she really here, or was this just another dream?
Charlotte hadn’t expected Nora to wake up so suddenly. She stood frozen, unable to move. The warmth of Nora’s hand in hers was the only thing that reassured her this was real.
Nora coughed, the sound thin and sharp in the quiet. Charlotte snapped out of her daze and leaned in, gently rubbing Nora’s back to help her breathe.
After a moment, when Nora seemed a little more stable, Charlotte reached into her bag and pulled out a small vial. She filled a syringe with practiced hands, her voice raspy as she spoke. “Your heart’s too weak for this. You need to stay calm.”
Nora didn’t care. Her eyes were wide, searching desperately for the face behind Charlotte’s mask. She had to know if it was really her Lottie.
“I’m going to inject this into your arm now.”
Charlotte glanced at Nora’s face, her brows pinched with concern as she went through the motions. “It might hurt a bit. Hang in there.”
She gently slid up Nora’s sleeve, exposing her pale, almost translucent arm. Charlotte hesitated, a shadow passing through her eyes.
“You…”
Nora stared at Charlotte, her eyes clear and full of tears that threatened to fall, the rims bright red. Charlotte gave her a quick look, cleaned her arm with alcohol, and gave her the injection.
Setting the syringe aside, she focused all her attention on Nora’s face. For a few seconds, she just watched her, then suddenly reached up and pulled down her mask.
Nora finally saw her face—perfect, familiar, almost a mirror image. It really was Lottie.
Her breath caught. “Lottie…” Tears filled her eyes. She tried to reach out, wanting so badly to touch Charlotte’s face, but her body wouldn’t cooperate. Her hand barely lifted off the bed.
“Got it,” Jackson replied, taking the bag. He looked at Charlotte, noticing she had no intention of leaving. His brows knitted together. “You’re not coming?”
“No,” Charlotte replied calmly, sitting back in her chair with her eyes lowered. It was hard to read her expression, but her mood was obviously dark.
Adonis hesitated, glancing at Franco, then back at Charlotte. “Then I’ll stay here with you,” he offered, sounding a little unsure.
Charlotte didn’t even look up. “No need. There’s a lot of work to do. Go help Jackson.”
Jackson and Adonis exchanged a look but knew better than to argue. They left, glancing back at the door one last time.
At the door, Adonis stopped and glared at the butler. “If anything happens to her, I’ll burn this place to the ground.”
The butler didn’t respond. With the way Charlotte carried herself, who would even dare mess with her?
