After ending her chat with Dr. David, Charlotte set her phone aside and lay back, one pale arm resting over her forehead as she stared up at the ceiling, lost in thought.
Should she tell Anthony? She hesitated, weighing the idea, but eventually let it go. She would wait for the test results tomorrow. If everything went as expected, then she’d tell him. No need to get ahead of herself. Besides, she still hadn’t figured out how to deal with the two people next door, let alone how she’d introduce Anthony to them.
She tried to let herself relax, closing her eyes, but her phone suddenly lit up. Instinctively, she reached for it, thinking it might be Anthony. The moment she saw the sender, her excitement faded. It was Adonis.
Adonis: Charlotte, Franco just made a move against N Organization.
The message made Charlotte frown.
Nine: What happened exactly?
Adonis: He used an excuse to block one of our most important shipments at the border.
That shipment was vital. With it stuck outside, everything would grind to a halt. The loss would be just as bad as what X Organization had suffered. Franco was clearly warning N Organization to keep their distance from X Organization.
Adonis: What should we do now?
Charlotte stared at her phone, her eyes flashing with something unreadable. She typed back.
Don’t worry about it. Whatever we lose, I’ll make sure the President’s office pays us back.
Adonis: Charlotte, what does that mean?
Was she negotiating with Franco already? But the results weren’t even in yet. No one knew the details of Franco’s wife’s illness. What if Charlotte couldn’t cure her?
Nine: Just focus on what I asked you to do.
She closed the chat and tossed her phone aside. Even with her eyes shut, she stayed alert, listening to the noises from the other room.
She didn’t sleep at all that night.
...
Meanwhile, at Apex headquarters, Anthony sat in his office, buried in work for X Organization.
Hans knocked and hurried over, his face tense. “Anthony, there are two things.”
“Lottie said the test was done, right? Franco’s in Solenia, she’s in Cabinda. How did they run a test?”
Realization hit Hans. His face went pale, and he stammered, “Anthony… are you saying Charlotte went to Solenia?”
If she’d gone to Solenia now, there could only be one reason. She must have found a lead on Covid-X.
“I’ll investigate right away.”
With Anthony’s expression growing darker by the second, Hans didn’t dare hesitate. He rushed out to get answers.
Anthony stayed where he was, his posture rigid, his handsome face clouded with anger. He knew it. Charlotte never played by the rules.
...
The next morning, Charlotte finished washing up and stepped into the bedroom.
Franco was still wearing yesterday’s clothes, sitting by Nora’s bedside, gently wiping her fingers with a warm towel. He looked exhausted, like he hadn’t slept at all, but when he looked at Nora, his gaze and touch were impossibly gentle.
