Charlotte pressed her lips together and looked up at Franco. Instantly, her face fell.
Franco was still riding the high of holding Charlotte’s hand. When he noticed the sudden disappointment in her eyes, he froze. “What’s wrong?” His smile wavered. “Did I say something I shouldn’t have? Or did I mess up your name?”
Charlotte stayed quiet, and Franco’s nerves started to fray.
“No, you didn’t,” Nora chimed in softly. She watched Charlotte with gentle eyes. “I’m the one who gave you your first and last name.”
Charlotte turned to look at her, surprised.
“Back then, my information was out in the open. To make sure you’d be completely safe, I even changed your adoptive father’s records,” Nora explained. She reached out, her fingertips brushing Charlotte’s cheek, her whole expression filled with warmth and affection.
Charlotte listened in silence, taking it all in. So from head to toe, there was nothing about her that could be traced back to Steven.
“It’s a good name,” Charlotte said. She smiled as she grabbed a tissue and wiped the corner of Nora’s mouth. At least now she didn’t have to go through the hassle of changing her name.
“Lottie, can you…” Nora’s eyes didn’t leave Charlotte. Her voice was quiet and hoarse, struggling to get the words out. “Can you call me Mom?”
Mom.
Charlotte’s hand stopped midair. She just sat there, stunned. The word sounded so strange, it kind of shook her. She was happy to be reunited with her mother, honestly, but everything was happening so fast.
When Charlotte just pressed her lips together and said nothing, Nora realized she might have pushed too hard. She rushed to reassure her, “It’s okay, you don’t have to. Just… whenever you’re ready…”
“If I do, will it make you happy?” Charlotte cut her off, her voice a little awkward.
“Of course!” Nora answered right away, her eyes shining with hope. “It would make me so happy!”
Just then, a maid hurried in with a bowl of warm medicine and brought it over to Charlotte.
“Miss Charlotte, this is Mrs. Hawk’s medicine.” The maid handed it over and leaned in, whispering, “It’s pretty bitter. Mr. Hawk usually has to coax her for ages before she’ll drink it.”
“Got it.” Charlotte gave a small smile, took the medicine, scooped up a spoonful, blew on it, and held it out to Nora.
Nora eyed the dark, murky liquid. She could already imagine the awful taste, and instinctively wanted to pull away. But the moment she met Charlotte’s bright, expectant eyes, she opened her mouth and swallowed it down.
“Is it bitter?” Charlotte asked.
“Not at all.” Nora clung to the edge of Charlotte’s shirt, unable to look away from her. “It’s not bitter at all.”
