When did Nine get so weak?

Anthony caught the tension in Dr. David’s face and lowered his voice. “Is there something wrong?”

Dr. David hesitated, then let out a sigh. “I’m not sure if it’s because of the gene mutation, but Nine’s immune system isn’t what it used to be. She’s getting weaker.”

Anthony didn’t answer. The air around him seemed to thicken. He had already noticed it himself. Charlotte got tired so much easier now.

“The third check-up report—is it out?”

Dr. David nodded. “Yeah. The genes mutated again. That’s the third time.”

Three mutations in two months. The speed was unreal. It scared even him, but Nine just shrugged it off, acting like nothing was wrong.

“The worst part isn’t just how fast it’s happening,” Dr. David went on, his voice a little rough. “It’s that even with all these strange changes, her test results are coming back normal. Nothing shows up.”

But just because there were no signs didn’t mean she was okay. If something finally showed up, it would probably be too late.

“There’s another thing.”

Anthony turned away, eyes fixed on the bed. “What is it?”

Dr. David hesitated, then said quietly, “Nine’s mother’s medical report… There are some weird things in it. I think her genes mutated too.”

“I don’t know if her illness was caused by the mutation, but if it was, then Nine is in real danger.”

Nora’s genes mutated too? That meant Lottie might have inherited her mother’s condition.

Still, Dr. David said, “You know Nine. We can’t keep this from her forever.”

Charlotte had only just found her mom. She cared more about her mother’s health than her own.

“I know,” Anthony said quietly. His voice was rough around the edges. “I’ll tell her when the time is right.”

No matter what happened, he’d carry the weight for her. He’d be there, no matter what.

He hung up.

Anthony stepped back into the bedroom and watched Charlotte sleeping. Dr. David’s words kept echoing in his mind. His jaw clenched as he whispered, “Lottie’s going to live a long, long life.”
