Who would’ve guessed, after all these years, he’d get another shot at this. If he could just get his hands on a patient with the “genetic mutation,” he’d finally crack the code—figure out what caused it, and maybe even find a cure.
“Text them back,” G2 said, nearly buzzing with excitement. “We trade—the person for the cure.”
Once they got her to the Isle of Veil, there was no chance she’d ever walk out again.

Solenia.
Ever since Charlotte had given her that miracle drug, Nora felt almost like herself again. She knew enough about medicine to realize it was only keeping her alive, not healing her. The second it stopped working, if she didn’t find the real antidote, her strength would disappear fast. She’d fade, then die.
After breakfast, Nora sat down at her computer. When the notification pinged, she was staring off into space, missing Lottie. She snapped back to reality and clicked open the message.
The gene biology institute had replied.
[Let’s meet. The person for the antidote.]
Did they really think she was that naive? Did they honestly believe she didn’t know what kind of place the Isle of Veil was?
Nora’s expression turned icy as she typed her reply. [I know the original antidote for the mutation was destroyed years ago. You don’t have the real thing.]
The other side probably hadn’t expected the “patient” to know so much. The reply didn’t come for a long time.
Nora let her fingers hover above the keyboard, then typed again. [I want all the research data you’ve collected on the antidote these past twenty years.]
Smart move.
Her dad really did have a brother with a black heart.
“Guard shift changes at ten tonight.” Anthony spread out a map, zipping up her jacket while he talked. “The left gate’s the hotspot. More guards, and it gets messy during the shift change.”
Charlotte just leaned back, half-smiling as she listened. Didn’t matter which door she used. Even with all their security, this place felt like her own backyard.
“Grab the files and get out. Don’t stick around.” Anthony handed her the map and opened his laptop, fingers flying as he hacked into the security system. The moment he locked it down, every door in the institute would slam shut. She’d have ten minutes, tops.
“Got it.”
Charlotte nodded, pushed the car door open, and caught Anthony’s stormy look before she stepped out.
She leaned back in, kissed him quick, and tapped her finger right over his heart. “Don’t worry, Anthony. The only place that can ever hold me is here.”
