Adonis glanced at Charlotte's stormy face and gripped the handle so tightly his knuckles turned white. He swallowed hard and tried to sound calm. "Anthony wouldn't have gone to The Gilded Wheel alone unless he had a plan. He must have prepared for this, so please, try not to worry."

He wanted to add that maybe she could ease off the gas a little. At this speed, he and Jackson would be goners before they even found Anthony.

Charlotte barely glanced at him. Her eyes scanned the laptop and narrowed when she saw the guns trained on Anthony. Whatever warmth she had left vanished, replaced by a cold, lethal determination.

She didn't speak. One hand on the wheel, she leaned on the horn and floored the accelerator.

The black Hummer tore down the busy city street. Cars around them slowed, drivers craning their necks to catch a glimpse as they flew past. All anyone saw was a blur and heard the echo of the horn. By the time they realized what had happened, the Hummer was already a memory in the rearview mirror.

Jackson and Adonis looked like they'd seen ghosts. They both knew their luck was running thin.

Those people from the Isle of Veil had better not do anything stupid. If Anthony got hurt, it wouldn't just be Aloys coming for them. The whole island would pay.

"Yes," Marcia said softly, her smile never fading, but her hands clenched at her sides.

She wanted this marriage. She really did. But Mr. Churchill seemed to care less than anyone. She hardly ever saw him, and he’d even told her—more than once—that the engagement meant nothing. He didn’t want to marry her.

But what did he know? Marrying her was the best choice for his family. As long as the Churchills agreed, his opinion didn’t matter.

He’d marry her, whether he liked it or not. She was the only one fit to be Mrs. Churchill. And if any other woman dared to try...
