The Monster at My Feet novel Chapter 38

"That's amazing!" Lydia's tone finally shifted with genuine excitement. "Thank you so much, Gillian!"

"I still don't get you," Gillian replied. "Majoring in financial analysis with a minor in law? Just looking at those textbooks gives me a headache. How do you stomach it?"

"I just find it interesting," Lydia said simply.

Gillian's family was even wealthier than the Lawsons and possessed deep academic connections.

Because of this, Lydia had made sure to become her best friend the moment they started college.

Seeing that their coffees were ready, Lydia stood up and walked over to the counter.

She stopped in front of Sylvie.

The younger girl looked up timidly. "Lydia?"

Lydia sighed, gazing down at her.

Her long chestnut curls fell forward, softening her sharp, striking features.

"Don't take what she said to heart."

The young girl nodded pitifully, the picture of meek obedience. "I know."

Lydia took the coffees, but couldn't help adding,

"You shouldn't just swallow all these grievances. Enduring it will only make them push harder. Being too soft isn't a good look anywhere.

"And... I don't know why you're working here, but if you need money, you can always ask me."

Sylvie blinked, looking up at her in genuine surprise.

By the time she processed it, Lydia was already walking back to join Gillian.

Was that actual concern?

The young girl found it incredibly amusing. She had expected Lydia to tell her to stay away from the house and stop upsetting Helena.

As the day went on, a steady stream of customers filtered in.

Almost everyone who walked through the door had the exact same reaction: they stopped dead in their tracks, staring at Sylvie's face in sheer awe.

When did Echo hire a gorgeous, doll-like new barista?

She was breathtaking!

A few guys sneakily snapped photos and uploaded them to the campus forum.

[New girl at Echo near the gates! She is ridiculously cute!]

But mere seconds after the post went live, it was deleted.

The poster was completely baffled, racking his brain to figure out what banned word he could have possibly used.

He tried posting again.

His entire account was permanently banned.
