Chapter 119

ASTRA

The shrill sound of my alarm dragged me awake just before six.

For a few seconds, I lay there staring at the ceiling, trying to remember what day it was.

Monday.

Right.

50 yourey

With a groan, I forced myself upright and reached for Patches. The little stuffed bear had somehow ended up wedged against the wall during the night.

“There you are.”

I smiled, smoothing a paw before pressing a quick kiss to his little forehead.

“Wish me luck today, buddy,” I whispered.

Only then did I climb out of bed.

After making my bed and tidying my room, I headed into the bathroom for a quick shower. Once I was done, I slipped back into my pajamas before crossing the hallway to wake the twins.

The twins’ bedroom door was already open.

Mason was standing in front of the sink, hair damp from his shower as he carefully brushed his teeth with complete concentration.

He looked up when he saw me.

“Morning, Astra.”

I smiled.

“Morning, sweetheart.”

Lucas…

Lucas was another story entirely.

He was still buried beneath his dinosaur blanket, only a messy tuft of brown hair sticking out.

I walked over and gently rubbed his back.

“Lucas,” I called softly, sitting on the edge of his bed. “Time to wake up, sleepyhead.”

He grumbled something incoherent and tried to pull the blanket over his head. I laughed quietly and tugged it back down.

“Come on, baby. School bus in thirty minutes.”

It took another five minutes of gentle coaxing before he finally sat up, rubbing his eyes with a dramatic yawn

“I’m too tired for school.”

“Oh? Should I tell your teacher you retired?”

Chapter 119

“No…”

His little face finally peeked out, eyes barely open.

“…Tell her I died.”

I burst into laughter.

“Oh my goodness.”

“You can’t laugh at dead people.”

“I’m pretty sure you’re still alive.”

He sighed dramatically.

“Unfortunately.”

By the time I got him out of bed, helped him get dressed, and fixed both boys’ hair, they looked perfectly presentable.

Well…

Lucas’s tie was crooked.

Again.

I straightened it while he made exaggerated suffering noises.

“It’s choking me.”

“It’s barely touching you.”

I sent them downstairs, then hurried to my room to slip into my uniform before heading to the kitchen.

Within half an hour, breakfast was on the table.

The twins chatted happily between bites while I carefully packed their lunches.

If I mixed them up…

There would be complaints.

Very serious complaints.

“…And then Mason cheated,” Lucas was saying.

“I did not,” Mason replied calmly.

“You won because you’re sneaky.”

“I won because I’m smarter.”

Lucas gasped in outrage.

Before another argument could begin, a deep, mature voice drifted into the dining room.

“Good morning.”

I looked up immediately.

Mr. Ashton stood in the doorway, impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit, his tie perfectly knotted as though he’d stepped straight out of a magazine. His expression was composed as always, carrying that quiet authority that seemed to fill every room he entered.

“G/good morning, sir,” I said quickly.

His gaze settled briefly on me before moving to the twins.

“Morning, boys.”

“Morning, Dad!” Lucas chirped.

“Good morning,” Mason echoed.

Watching them together, I couldn’t help noticing something I’d realized over the past few weeks.

Mr. Ashton was… warmer with the twins.
