The dance finally ended. I bowed with my hand over my chest to my partner, Stacy. Her cheeks bloomed an even deeper red the second I straightened, and I couldn’t help the smirk that tugged at my mouth as I winked at her.
I was just about to turn and go looking for my pretty little doll-those big blue eyes and that soft, plump little body I’d been dying to pull into my arms all evening-when a soft hand suddenly settled against my torso.
My brows drew together. I turned and found Stacy staring down at her feet before she slowly lifted her gaze, peeking up at me through her lashes.
“What is it?”
She swallowed. “S-so I… I was wondering what you were doing later.”
I looked at her for a second. Then my eyes dropped to the hand still resting against my side.
Very gently, I took her wrist and eased her hand away.
“I appreciate you asking,” I said evenly. “But I already have other plans.”
Disappointment flickered across her face.
“Oh…”
“I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening.”
She managed a small smile and nodded. “Y-yeah. You too.”
I gave her a polite nod and turned away.
Only to stop dead.
Maya stood a few feet away, arms folded, eyes locked on Stacy like she’d just caught something filthy on her shoe.
The second Stacy noticed that expression, she visibly shrank.
“Leave.”
Stacy didn’t need to be told twice. She hurried into the crowd without another word.
Maya watched her go before turning back to me, mouth already curling.
“You have no shame, do you?”
I sighed.

Chapter 155
“What do you want?”
She ignored the question entirely.
“I saw you following that fat lump around all night like some pathetic puppy.”
A faint smile tugged at my mouth.
“Well… she is my master.”
Maya blinked.
“So if I’m the dog…” I shrugged casually. “Following her around is kind of the job.”
I tilted my head slightly.
“You have a dog, don’t you? You know how they are.”
For a second she just stared at me like I’d lost my mind.
“Have you gone insane?”
“Possibly.”
“You’re embarrassing yourself.”
“No.” I smiled. “I’m embarrassing you.”
Her jaw tightened.
“I don’t understand what your family sees in that low-life girl. Or her mother.”
The smile left my face completely.
I took one slow step forward.
Maya instinctively stepped back.
Another step.
She retreated again.

Maya held my gaze, though the confidence in her eyes had begun to crack. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
“I think you’re confused.”
My voice stayed quiet, almost soft.
“My family helps whoever they choose.”

I stopped just in front of her.
“But you…” My eyes held hers without blinking. “You don’t get to speak about Astra that way.”
“Oh, please…”
“No.”
The single word cut clean through hers.
I leaned in just enough that only she could hear me.

“If I hear you call her names again… if I hear you insult her mother again…” My jaw flexed once. “You’ll spend the rest of senior year wishing I’d merely ignored you.”
For the first time all night, real uncertainty crossed Maya’s face. She searched my expression, clearly looking for the joke.
She didn’t find one.
I straightened my coat.
“Stay away from her.”
Then I walked past without another glance.
I had something far more important to do.
Find my Trouble.
I walked away from Maya, irritation still sitting bitter on my tongue.
That girl had a way of getting under my skin without even trying. But the second I stepped back into the main flow of the party, the only thing I wanted was Astra.
I needed to see her.
That little annoyed look she’d give me whenever I appeared out of nowhere. The one she tried so hard to hide while those pale cheeks betrayed her with the prettiest shade of pink.
I scanned the crowd.
No golden hair. No midnight-blue dress. No soft curve of her body under the candlelight.
My jaw tightened.
I headed straight for the drink table where Chloe and Priya stood laughing over something.
“Have either of you seen Astra?” I asked, voice tighter than I meant it to be.
Chloe blinked. “Not since the last dance. Why?”

A strange, cold feeling settled in my chest.
:
I turned without answering and started moving faster through the room.
“Astra.”

No answer.
I pushed through a group of students, eyes sharp.
“Trouble.”
Still nothing.
Then Jason appeared right in front of me.
I stopped short.
“What?” I asked flatly.
“I need to talk to you.”
“Get out of the way.”
He didn’t move. “Ashton…”
