Since Jin San’s departure, the three had mostly just chatted on their Communication Devices. Seeing each other again, they were still as friendly as ever, with no awkwardness at all.
Regarding Xue Can kicking Jin San out of the Gale Mercenary Corps, both Jiang Hua and Liu Wei felt he was just using it as an excuse to act.
Nobody’s perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. Jin San had made some in the past, but Brother Wu, the one who’d been wronged, didn’t even hold it against him. Yet it was Xue Can who insisted on being petty about it.
"You have no idea. Xue Can is getting more and more out of line." After a few drinks, Jiang Hua’s tongue loosened. "You know that big government contract the corps took on a while ago? Well, just yesterday, Xue Can took it upon himself to pull us out of it!"
Liu Wei couldn’t help but curse, "Son of a bitch! If we’d done that job, forget how much money we would have made, we would have at least made a name for ourselves with the government! It would have made it easier to get other contracts in the future. It was such a great opportunity, and he just threw it away, completely ignoring our objections. He’s a real piece of shit!"
"He really turned it down?" Jin San was shocked. "No way. That’s the kind of opportunity countless Mercenary Corps would kill for!"
"Exactly. We don’t know what’s gotten into him. He hasn’t been at the base at all for the past couple of days, and we have no idea what he’s up to."
"Did he do anything unusual before he turned down the contract?" Jin San asked.
Liu Wei and Jiang Hua thought for a moment, then both shook their heads. "Who knows? It’s not like we’re with him twenty-four seven."
"Could it be... he got into a fight with Lei Li? After all, the Lei family was the one who pulled the strings to get us this opportunity in the first place."
Liu Wei grunted in agreement. "That’s possible. Xue Can is a real piece of shit. What’s not to like about Miss Lei? She’s beautiful, her Superpower Level is high, and she’s completely devoted to him. But that guy? He just refuses to give her the time of day."
"He’s just playing virtuous. How else could he get Lei Li so hooked she can’t stop thinking about him? The colder he acts toward her, the more she can’t let go," Jiang Hua sneered. "I just wonder if he’s finally overplayed his hand this time."
Jin San almost laughed out loud.
’Yes, yes, yes. This is exactly the effect I was going for.’
’Looks like leaking that information to Lei Li wasn’t for nothing. The results are already plain to see.’
"Ah, let’s stop talking about this frustrating stuff. Come on, drink up." Jin San poured them both more alcohol and called over two girls to keep them company.
Liu Wei and Jiang Hua’s pay at the Gale Mercenary Corps was in the lowest bracket. When they came to Gold Street, they could usually only afford to eat and drink a little. They couldn’t bring themselves to pay for girls—it was too expensive. Ordering a few more bottles of liquor was a better deal.
But since Jin San was footing the bill, they finally got to indulge.
With his arm around one of the girls and dizzy from all the drinks, Jiang Hua suddenly started asking about what Jin San was up to these days.
"Jin San, where are you working these days? You’re being so generous, don’t tell me you’ve struck it rich?"
Jin San waved his hand dismissively. "Struck it rich? Nah, I’m just getting by."
He had the look of someone who didn’t want to say more.
Liu Wei and Jiang Hua weren’t the sharpest guys to begin with, so when Jin San gave them a vague answer, they didn’t press the issue.
On his way to the restroom, Jin San ran into Lei Li again.
"What a coincidence. What brings Miss Lei here today?"
This wasn’t the club Lei Li usually frequented. It was a less upscale establishment, and its clientele was a motley crew.
But the prices were more affordable, which was why it was a regular haunt for Jiang Hua and his friends.
Lei Li’s eyes were hazy with drink. Leaning against a male model, she shot Jin San a sideways glance, her crimson lips parting to say, "None of your fucking business."
’Does he really think I couldn’t tell he leaked that information to me on purpose?’
’I just can’t be bothered to deal with it.’
’Besides, half of what he said was true. Otherwise, I would’ve taught him a lesson long ago.’
But that didn’t mean she had to like him.
