Claire raised an eyebrow. "I did. Actually, he even confessed his feelings to me."
The lines of Miles's profile turned instantly rigid. His grip on his fountain pen tightened noticeably, his eyes turning dangerously somber.
Look at that reaction. And he still had the nerve to claim he didn't want to be with her.
What the hell was this stubborn old man waiting for?
"Of course, I turned him down." Deciding not to torture him any further, Claire leaned across the desk, playfully poking a finger directly against his chest to punctuate every word.
"Because you're the only man I have eyes for, Dr. Zimmerman."
"Smooth talker." Miles swatted her hand away.
The man's gaze then fell upon her neck.
Frowning slightly, he stood up and brushed aside the loose hair around her collarbone to get a better look.
A smattering of fresh, raised red bumps covered her skin.
"What happened to your neck?"
"Hmm?" Claire blinked, confused by his sudden seriousness.
Now that he mentioned it, her neck was actually itching quite a bit.
"I might have gotten bitten by a bug."
She raised her hand to feel her skin. It really was covered in tiny bumps.
"Don't move." Miles grabbed her wrist. The grip wasn't painful, but it brokered zero argument.
He walked around the desk to inspect the rash closely.
"Did you eat anything out of the ordinary tonight?"
He was standing incredibly close, his warm breath grazing her sensitive ear.
Claire's heart began to hammer against her ribs.
"Nothing crazy. Just some shrimp and crab," she answered honestly, unconsciously lifting her hand to scratch. "It is really itchy, though..."
The harder she scratched, the worse it got, the itch quickly transforming into a burning sting.
