Claire looked impatient. "Let go."
The man tightened his grip. "Doing all this just to piss me off... is it worth it?"
"Slap!"
With her free hand, Claire delivered a resounding backhand across Jefferson's face.
A bright red handprint quickly swelled on his cheek.
Taking advantage of his shock, Claire yanked her wrist free and took a step back.
"You think I'd waste my energy trying to piss off a piece of trash like you?"
Her voice was ice-cold, every word a stinging blow.
"Stop harassing me."
Jefferson stood frozen, staring at her in disbelief as he demanded, "Claire, was I not good enough to you? Who gave you the right to..."
She cut him off. "Good to me? Good to me by purposely hiding my mother's kidney matches twice? Good to me by getting married behind my back?"
"If that's your definition, Jefferson, then you were incredibly good to me."
The man's pupils trembled. "When did you find out?"
Claire had no interest in indulging him. She turned on her heel to leave.
Panic seized Jefferson, his ugly, true colors completely slipping out.
"Claire! If you walk out that door, I'll let your mother die in that hospital! If I don't give the nod, who would dare operate on her?"
She slowly turned back, giving him a cold look. "Sorry to burst your bubble, but my mother's surgery is already done."
Jefferson's body went completely rigid. "Impossible. Who would dare touch her case?!"
He scrambled for his phone, barking at his assistant to look up Susan's records and find her attending physician.
Claire smirked. She knew Jefferson too well.
That was exactly why she had Miles scrub all of Susan's records, especially the name of her lead surgeon, ahead of time.
At the very least, she couldn't let Jefferson suspect Miles just yet.
She turned and walked away, never looking back.
