Late at night, at the Southside Apartments.

Jefferson pushed the door open, thoroughly frustrated. He roughly yanked his tie loose, popping the top two buttons of his shirt to reveal his tanned, firm chest.

He had been drinking with several brand representatives all evening. Right now, his body ran hot, his stomach churned with nausea, and his head throbbed painfully.

Normally at this hour, Claire would have rushed over, looking at him with utter heartache. She would help him undress, bring him a glass of lemon water to sober up, and cook him a comforting hot bowl of soup so he wouldn't sleep on an empty stomach.

Her dependent gaze and wholehearted devotion always made him feel worshiped. He thoroughly enjoyed that feeling.

Jefferson kicked the coffee table, deliberately making a loud crash.

He waited for a moment, but nobody came out.

Was she asleep?

He raised his voice, clearly dissatisfied. "Claire, I'm home. Didn't you hear me?"

Whatever, he thought. He was a man, he shouldn't bicker with a woman.

He decided to show a moment of weakness to give her a graceful out, softening his tone.

"Claire, I drank too much. I don't feel well..."

The apartment remained dead silent. The only sound was his own heavy breathing.

"Claire!"

Jefferson stood up furiously and marched toward the master bedroom in the dark.

"You really think you're tough now? Disobeying me at work and giving me attitude at home?"

He grabbed the door handle, just about to push it open.

His phone suddenly rang. It was Yvonne on the other end.

"Jefferson, where are you? Grandpa wants to finalize a few details regarding the engagement. Can you come over right now?"

Jefferson rubbed his temples impatiently and took a deep breath.

"Fine. Send me the address. I'm on my way."
