Miles had seen through her little charade immediately, but he chose not to expose her in that moment.
He did, however, need to call Jared and tell him to stop looking for new tenants.
Seeing his prolonged silence, Claire bit her lip nervously.
"Dr. Zimmerman, you aren't mad that I moved in without telling you, are you?"
"No. Where you choose to live is your own business."
"Well then, goodnight, Dr. Zimmerman!" Seeing that he wasn't angry and looked perfectly normal, Claire finally relaxed and slipped into apartment 502.
Miles closed his door and set the women's slippers back down.
His living room was shrouded in darkness.
The man leaned back against the door, standing in the pitch black for a very long time.
In the car, her soft, painfully sweet words—"I'm going home"—kept playing on an endless loop in his mind.
His hands, hanging by his sides, slowly curled into tight fists.
For a split second, he had actually believed Claire wanted to come home with him to his apartment.
He was losing his mind, actually entertaining the idea of bringing her inside.
The foolishness of repeating past mistakes... he couldn't stop himself; he was about to fall right back into it...

The night was heavy. Southside Apartments.
Jefferson unlocked the door to a pitch-black apartment. Just like always, he habitually dropped onto the sofa.
After how wildly disobedient Claire had been at the engagement party today, he shouldn't have come back at all. He had explicitly threatened to leave her to sleep alone in this empty place.
But now that his marriage to Yvonne was public knowledge, there was no point in hiding it anymore. He needed to set the record straight with Claire.
Even if she didn't want to accept it, she had to understand her place.
He glanced toward the master bedroom, his voice lazy and arrogant. "Claire, I'm home."
Silence.
Swallowing his temper, he spoke again, his tone dripping with sheer condescension.
"I'm willing to overlook what happened at the banquet today. I forgive you."
"Yvonne is gracious. Even after finding out who you are, she didn't make things difficult for you. My arrangement with her is strictly business."
"I won't touch her. You're the only woman I'll sleep with."
