"I want to see the lead doctor! I want to see your boss! Tell him to come out!"
The blade grazed the young nurse's cheek, and she shrieked in terror.
"Help me, please help me, Dr. Zimmerman..."
Miles's voice was clear and steady. "You can tell me what your demands are. Put the knife down first. Don't do something you'll regret."
The man glared at him, his mind completely consumed by despair and rage.
"None of you are any good! My son died because of you!"
Refusing to listen to any explanations, he gripped the knife and lunged straight at Miles.
The security guards tried to intervene, but everything happened too fast.
The crowd scattered in panic.
Miles's gaze turned glacial as he swiftly dodged, but the man slashed upwards again.
The angle was incredibly vicious, leaving no room to evade. Pure instinct took over, and Miles raised his arm to block the strike.
He had to prioritize protecting his surgical hands.
A slender figure suddenly threw herself from diagonally behind him, recklessly shielding Miles with her own body.
She had no time to think; in that split second, her mind was completely blank.
Slash—
The blade sliced through fabric and sank deep into her arm.
Claire let out a muffled groan of pain as blood surged out. She stumbled and fell right into Miles's embrace.
The screams from the crowd grew louder.
At the sight of blood, the attacker finally snapped out of his frenzy. He stumbled backward and collapsed onto the floor, his eyes going completely hollow.
The air froze.
Miles stared at the pale face of the woman in his arms, watching the blood steadily pouring from her arm. An unprecedented wave of terror swallowed him whole, stealing the breath from his lungs.
"Claire Jenner!"
He extended his long arms, holding her tightly against him.
"Miles," the woman in his arms forced her eyes open, her forehead slick with cold sweat. She managed a weak, fragile smile. "Are... are you okay? I'm not in pain..."
"Stop talking." Miles gritted his teeth, sweeping her up into his arms and carefully laying her onto a gurney a nurse had rushed over.
