The bag didn't hold a late-night delivery. It contained a mangled, bloody, and unrecognizable dead cat.
The carcass tumbled onto the floor, its dark red blood and matted fur smearing the tiles. Its hollow, lifeless eyes seemed to stare straight at her.
A small piece of paper fluttered out from inside the bag.
Scrawled in bloody letters were two words: Claire Jenner.
At that exact moment.
The door to apartment 501 was violently thrown open!
Seeing the grotesque lump on the floor, Miles's body reacted before his mind even processed the scene.
He bolted forward, shooting his arm out to firmly catch Claire.
Claire's body had gone completely limp. She was shaking violently, her hands gripping his clothes in a death grip, her teeth chattering uncontrollably. "It's... it's my... name..."
"Don't look."
Miles raised his hand to cover her eyes and pulled her straight into his apartment.
The horrifying sight and the pungent stench of blood were shut firmly outside.
"Mi... Miles..."
She couldn't even form a coherent sentence.
Miles's chest tightened painfully, a sharp ache gripping his heart.
He slowly raised his hand. It was slightly stiff, but he began firmly, gently patting her back, murmuring low words of comfort.
"It's okay. I'm here. Let me handle this."
Hearing his voice, Claire's frayed nerves slowly began to unwind, and her rationality trickled back.
She turned, throwing her arms around his waist and burying her face into his chest.
Miles stiffened.
The woman in his arms felt soft and fragile. Trembling from the shock, she cried softly against him, slowly dampening the fabric of his shirt.
Her scent invaded his senses again, wrapping entirely around him.
He immediately, gently returned the embrace.
