"I brought some supplies for everyone. Silas, could you help pass these out?"
Silas looked thrilled. "This is..."
Claire smiled, her tone light. "A friend of mine, Julian Young. He's also a designer."
Silas and the elders beamed with joy.
Julian hurried over to Claire, a look of deep concern on his face.
"Are you okay? I couldn't reach you yesterday. I didn't sleep at all." He stared at her, terrified. "Does your arm still hurt?"
"The roads were completely washed out. Good thing I brought the SUV." He flashed a bright smile.
"I'm fine, don't worry."
Miles stood a short distance away, every muscle locked tight.
His face remained stoic, but a storm raged in his eyes. His hands curled into tight fists by his sides.
A suffocating wave of despair crashed over him, the dark jealousy nearly driving him mad.
She was his light... how could she shine on someone else?
"Cough..." Julian stumbled slightly. Exhausted from the treacherous drive, his face was pale.
Claire caught his arm, her voice laced with worry. "What's wrong? Are you hurt?"
Miles's eyes locked onto her hand gripping Julian.
The same soft, delicate hand that had been wrapped around his waist just hours ago.
And this guy was leaning in so close. It was sickening.
A bitter rage flared in his chest, which he violently swallowed down.
Julian swayed again, practically collapsing into Claire's arms. His voice was weak. "I rushed out here so fast I didn't eat anything. My stomach is killing me."
"Don't worry about me, Claire."
"Low blood sugar and stomach pain?" Miles stepped forward, his voice a low, smooth purr. "I'm a doctor. Let me take a look."
"Sit here, Mr. Young." It sounded more like a command than an offer.
"He's right, he's a doctor. Let him check you out." Claire helped Julian to a nearby stool.
"Thanks, Dr. Zimmerman." Forced away from Claire, Julian sat down.
Miles casually wiped down his stethoscope with an alcohol pad before pressing it to Julian's chest, listening intently.
