Claire chatted with Silas about her future plans for the mill, while Miles stood by quietly, listening to every word.

When the visit ended, they walked out of the ward together.

"Don't worry. He'll be discharged in about a week," Miles assured her.

Claire nodded, her eyes catching the shift roster on the wall. Vivian Langford's name was conspicuously absent.

"Dr. Langford isn't here today?"

Miles sounded utterly indifferent. "Haven't noticed. She hasn't come into work since our hotpot dinner."

He added mildly, "She probably just needed a break."

Claire was utterly speechless.

She checked in on her mother, Susan Jenner, before finally leaving the hospital and heading back to Grandview Heights.

The second the elevator doors opened, she heard frantic banging.

"Unit 502! Open the door! Are you dead in there?"

A woman with perfectly styled curls and expensive designer clothes was hammering her fists against the door.

A massive puddle of water was rapidly seeping out from under the doorway.

"Excuse me, I live in 502. Is there a..."

The woman whipped around, her manicured nail practically jabbing into Claire's eye.

"You're the one renting 502?"

"Do you realize your place is completely flooded? My ceiling is ruined! My Italian crystal chandelier is drenched!"

"I'm so sorry, I had no idea..."

Claire apologized profusely as she unlocked her door.

Freezing water immediately gushed out into the hallway, rising past her ankles. Near the bathroom, a busted pipe was spraying water relentlessly.

She immediately crouched in the freezing water, desperately feeling around inside the cabinet for the main shutoff valve.

"I have the absolute worst luck having a miserable, broke neighbor like you!" the woman shrieked.
