The Pack's Hacker (by Cooper) novel Chapter 424

Wendy

It was late at night before my mother appeared. I was sitting between Jude and Tracker, holding Tracker’s hand and leaning my head on Jude’s shoulder. My mother emerged, mumbling to herself.

“… obviously doesn’t know the rules in my hospital. I’ll have to make an announcement, so the other elite squad members know the rules,” she says before looking up at jam-packed waiting room.

Her eyes find Tracker. “Jaelynn, your mate is stable. Why don’t you come back.”

“Can … can Sphinx come too?” she asks, squeezing my hand.

“Of course.”

I squeeze Jude’s hand, then walk with Tracker as we follow my mother to a recovery room. When she gets to the door, my mother stops and turns to Tracker.

“Your heart rate is a bit high, Jaelynn. I’d like to do a quick check on you and your pup, if you don’t mind. I can do that while you sit with you mate.”

“He’s going to be okay?” she asks, her voice quivering.

My mother glances at me, then back at Jaelynn. “I have a rule in my hospital,” she begins.

“Sphinx told me. No one dies in your hospital. So, he’s okay?”

“I’m planning to keep him down for two days. He’s probably not going to like that, but he’ll get over it. He suffered serious injuries and without him being conscious, I don’t know how forward or how strong his wolf is,” my mother says.

“Blade is a very strong wolf,” she says, passionately.

“I’m sure he is. Having you here will make both of them stronger and they will heal faster knowing that their mate and pup are healthy and safe. That’s why I’m going to do an assessment of you and your pup.”

“Whatever you think is best, Sanatrix.”

My mother blinks. I’m not sure she realized that everyone on the elite squads is already using her code name.

My mother opens the door for us. “Why don’t you get settled. I’ll be back in a moment with what I need to check you over, Jaelynn.”

“Thanks, Mom,” I say as I step into the room after Tracker.

I have to admit, seeing Raptor lying on the bed unconscious is a huge wake-up call to the dangers of being out in the field. I knew that Cipher and Jude both went out one after the other, but if this is the norm during missions, it’s no wonder the Council has been courting my mother, practically begging her to take this position. They need her.

“Do you know what his injuries are?” I ask Tracker.

She shakes her head and just stares at her mate.

“Come on. It helps if you hold their hand. And, I know from experience, that when you’re unconscious, you can sometimes feel and hear your loved ones when they’re in the room. Talk to him, Tracker. Even if Raptor is unconscious, even if Blade is silent, they’ll feel you and know you’re here,” I tell her as I lead her to the bed.

“I can’t lose him, Wendy,” she whispers to me.

“And you won’t. I’m pretty sure my mother already gave him an earful about not dying on her.”

“How do you know that?” she asks.

I smile. “Zach nicknamed my mother Luna Murmur before she got her codename. It’s a very accurate name. My mother mumbles to herself a lot, and she doesn’t know she’s doing it. You learn a lot by listening to her talking to herself. You’ll see, trust me.”

She frowns. “But how do you know she gave Kit an earful? He was unconscious when he came in.”

“Did you hear her when she was walking out? She mentioned having to let all of the elite squad members know that no one dies in her hospital. Something must have happened while she was working on him. But like I said, no one dies in my mother’s hospital,” I say, then turn to Raptor.

“Did you hear that, Raptor? No one dies in my mother’s hospital. Jaelynn and your pup are here, so you and Blade better get your shit together.” 1

Almost as if my words have dragged him out of his unconscious state, Raptor forces his eyes open. It looks like it’s taking every bit of effort on his part to open them and keep them open and he grunts softly.

“Talk to him, Tracker,” I say and rush from the room.

“MOM! Raptor’s awake!”

“Already? What happened?” she asks as we rush back into the room.

“I told him Tracker and his pup were here and he and his wolf needed to get their shit together,” I say as she checks his pupils and heart rate.

Tracker is gripping his hand as if she might keep him from dying if she holds on tight enough. She probably doesn’t realize that tears are streaking down her cheeks.

“Welcome back, Kit. Your mate was worried about you,” she says.

He still looks like he’s trying to force himself awake and struggling to do it. His eyes keep drifting shut and he keeps forcing them back open.

“Your mate said you and your wolf are very strong. I see she was right.”

“I love you. I love you so much. Please don’t die on me,” Tracker cries. 1

“Not. Going. Anywhere,” he manages to say.

“You know what? How about I help you get into bed with your mate, Jaelynn. I can check you and your pup after you’ve had some sleep. Kit will heal faster with you next to him and you’ll be calmer in his arms,” my mother says.
