I watch as my father helps lead Jude away. He’s not steady on his feet, so I know the blood loss was significant.

“Sphinx, call Hijack and then I want you to walk me through what you saw,” Raptor says.

I nod, pulling out my phone and calling Hijack.

“Hey beautiful, what can I do for you?” he answers.

I sigh. He did tell me he wasn’t going to stop calling me that.

“Hacker’s down. Raptor needs you to switch out for twenty-four hours and, if you’re willing, take me on for that amount of time.”

“What happened to Hacker?” he says, his tone instantly serious and intense.

I tell him about finding Stellan and how Hacker pushed me aside and fought him.

“He can’t be too injured if Raptor is only keeping him out for twenty-four hours,” he says, but I hear him moving around.

“His wound is already starting to heal, but he’s weak. He said he’d work with Yana to start connecting the security system to the new packhouse if he started feeling better.”

“Good. If he’s not done when it’s time to rejoin the Alpha Squad, I can finish the set up.

“Thanks, Hijack.”

“Sphinx?”

“Yeah?”

“This isn’t your fault. Hacker’s a better fighter than that.”

I turn away from the others, walking away so they can’t hear me, even though I already confessed to Raptor.

“I froze, Hijack.”

He’s quiet for a moment. “Then we need to work on that, Sphinx. You can’t freeze in the field.”

“I know.”

“You’ll get there, Sphinx. You haven’t even started at the Academy yet.”

“If you don’t want me to come with you …”

“Are you trying to get out of a mission, Sphinx?” he asks. There’s enough challenge in his tone that the Alpha in me won’t let me back down.

“No.”

“Good, then I’ll see you in an hour.”

I hang up and turn to see Raptor watching me while talking to Venom, Intrigue, Hellfire, and Cipher.

“Are we good?” he asks.

“Hijack will be here in an hour,” I tell them. Chapter 15: Updating Alpha Squad

“Hijack is on his way to replace Hacker. Once he’s here, we’re going to river. I’m not going to risk crossing this one as the current is even stronger than the last one where we struggled to cross. We’ll check one side of the river to see if he got out and then the other. If we don’t find his scent, we’ll keep going until we find his scent or his body. Once we have Hijack, he and Sphinx can check for heat sources to make sure he’s not trying to hide from us.”

Almost as one, my family members all look at me.

“What? We found a cougar before, and Hacker and I saw Stellan’s heat source in the packhouse after we entered. I know what I’m looking for now.”

Quirin grins at me, then looks at Yorick. “Our little Wendy is growing up.”

Henry looks at him. “You do remember how much Kennedy hated you calling her Little Pup, right?”

“That was different, and Wendy is still underage. Keep up the good work, Sphinx,” Quirin says, winking at me and making me stand up straighter because of his praise. “And start trusting yourself more. You’re smart, strong, and intuitive. Stop second guessing yourself,” he says, making me deflate again.

“You’ve got this sis,” Yorick says, pulling me into a hug. His head snaps up and he smiles. “Hijack just pulled onto our pack lands.

“Alright everyone, let’s get ready to roll out. Cipher, you’re the driver for the tech team. You and Sphinx can fill Hijack in on the way,” Raptor says and they all head downstairs.

I start to follow the others, when Quirin pulls me to a stop.

“Hey, I meant what I said. You don’t give yourself enough credit, Wendy. You’re a Hill for fuck’s sake. Give me the name of one Hill who hasn’t succeeded in achieving what they wanted in life,” he says.

I swallow hard. “What if I’m the first who fails?” I whisper.

He leans closer to me. “Failure isn’t an option, not for the Hills, not for the Harrises, and not for the Bishops. So, you go out there and you make your family proud, just like you always have,” he says. “I have faith in you, Wendy.” 1

I smile and wrap my arms around him. Unlike the times before he mated with Kennedy, he wraps his arms around me, too. “Thanks, Quirin.”

“You can thank me by starting to believe in yourself.”

I nod, then let go. “I will.”

“Good. I need to know that this tech team is going to be state-of-the-art when my daughters come to the Academy in fifteen years,” he says.

“I’m pretty sure your daughters are going to break the Academy,” I say. Quirin smiles in a way he never did before he met Kennedy. It’s mostly pride, but there’s also the underlying threat of violence that is always part of who Quirin is. It lets me know that he fully expects his daughters to wreak havoc on the Academy and anywhere else they end up, and he can’t wait to sit back and watch it happen.

“If my daughters can break the Academy, then the Academy wasn’t good enough for them to begin with,” he growls, making me laugh. “Now, go be the Alpha female I know you can be.”

I nod and go looking for my team members. I take a deep breath and mentally prepare myself for what’s next.
