Alistair sat squarely in his chair, letting the girl grip his hand. He could feel her slightly cold fingertips.
Due to the power outage, the room's climate control system had also stopped working.
The late spring chill was biting.
With the study window open, a thread of cold wind slipped in.
Alistair stood up.
Seeing him rise, Celia's grip on his hand tightened instantly as she stood up with him. "Where are you going?"
In the dark, Alistair's dark eyes gleamed like a predator's. His Adam's apple bobbed as his voice came out low and hoarse. "To close the window. Your hands are freezing."
"I'll go with you..."
It was a childish thing to say.
It was literally just a few steps away.
But Alistair didn't object. He let her hold his hand, walking to the window and pulling it shut.
The wind stopped howling.
Turning around, he saw her standing before him with her head bowed, her petite frame entirely submissive and obedient.
The darkness was nothing to Alistair.
During his earlier days in the military, he had trained extensively to see in pitch-black conditions, so even without the lights, he could still read her expression clearly.
She was holding his hand in a vice grip.
For a moment, the sprawling study fell into absolute silence.
The moonlight outside was decent, casting a pale, hazy glow through the glass.
It was the only spot in the room with any visibility, so Alistair stayed by the window with her, making no move to leave.
"The main grid was hacked," Alistair said, breaking the eerie silence. "By Charles."
Charles?
The name sounded familiar.
A flicker of confusion crossed Celia's eyes before recognition dawned.
