The Prime Minister's Darling novel Chapter 695

Chapter 695: 327 Marriage Proposal (Two More Updates)_2

"How does that wretched girl deserve Changqing!" said the Lady of Gu Family, exasperated.

As soon as she had spoken, she met the icy gaze of the old Marquis.

Realising her verbal blunder, she quickly dodged his gaze by lifting her teacup to take a sip.

The butler knew he had won the situation, ceased his explanation, he bowed his hands meaningfully: "If the old Marquis and his lady have no objection to this marriage, I would report back to the Grand Tutor."

Lady Gu opened her mouth as if to say something, but a cold sweep by the eyes of Old Marquis silenced her instantly.

With satisfaction, the butler made his victorious exit.

Despite the apparent victory, he remained upset. A concubine? Was he expected to accept that Gu Jinyu, a woman with such a tarnished reputation, was deserving of such a position?

This was her undeserved fortune.

"My Lord..." The Lady of the Gu Family realized that her blunder has caused their defeat in the power tussle, she no longer dared to argue, but aligned herself with the Old Marquis, "Jin Yu is an empathetic child. Despite having made a few mistakes, she has turned over a new leaf. She went to Ciyu Village not long ago. With your support, along with the Queen’s, even if she becomes a concubine, the people in the village would not dare treat her harshly."

The Old Marquis still couldn’t accept the title of Concubine.

He never intended to climb any social ladder or for his children to marry into a higher status. However, he had a principle — the daughters of Gu Family would rather marry commoners as wives than become concubines in superior households.

Even though the concubine seemed more honorable than the co-wife, it was, after all, not the main wife.

The Old Marquis visited Gu Jinyu’s courtyard.

Gu Jinyu was recuperating in her room, her face pale, her demeanor haggard.

Old Marquis asked her, "Let me ask you this, if I can suppress this matter, would you be willing to marry someone else?"

In front of the Old Marquis, Gu Jinyu knelt down with tear-stained eyes, "Having shared the intimacy with Changqing, how could I ever be shameless enough to marry another man? If the Noble Family refuses to acknowledge me, then I would rather shave my head and become a nun in a nunnery..."

Old Marquis furrowed his brows, sighing deeply.

When would he not stick up for her, will never allow anybody to set foot on the reputation of his Marquis Residence and trample it underfoot.

Besides, the fault lay with the Noble Family in the first place. They bullied Gu Jinyu, refused to take responsibility and wanted to push her into a nunnery instead of accepting her. This was not how things should be.

"I can do it myself," she said, "I’m not seriously ill, the chill is negligible. Why did you even come, Your Majesty?"

The Emperor frowned, "If I didn’t arrange for people to secretly look after you, I wouldn’t even have known my mother was ill. This is just like old times, you always hide everything from me."

Lady Jing laughed softly. "I am getting older, of course I will have some minor issues. How could I be as healthy as I was in my youth? As the Sovereign of a country, Your Majesty has multiple matters to worry about, there is no need to fuss about such trivialities."

The Emperor scoffed, "Who says so? Look at the Dowager Empress, she is in excellent health! Even healthier than before!"

Lady Jing paused, seemingly caught off guard by the Emperor’s sudden mention of the Dowager Empress.

She laughed and said, "The Dowager Empress’s robust health is a blessing for Zhan Country. With Your Majesty enduring sleepless nights and working tirelessly all these years, the Dowager Empress has shared much of your burden."

The Emperor snorted, "Mother, you don’t have to speak for her."

Lady Jing smiled, "I’m not speaking for her. We entered the palace around the same time, we’ve known each other for many years. I understand her character well. Though she’s contentious and argumentative, she cares for you."

The Emperor replied coldly, "If she truly cared for me, she would hand over the control of the Court and spend her remaining years peacefully in the Renshou Palace."

"Alright, enough of this, the medicine is getting cold." Lady Jing picked up the bowl and started drinking the medicine.
