Fen Lin and Lin Chengye came over early in the morning, and Du Ruohan also came, but he went back after having lunch, so Gu Jiao didn’t get to meet Du Ruohan.
Early in the morning, Gu Jiao had invited Master Lu and Mistress Nanxiang, who both came over in the afternoon, almost arriving at Bishui Alley just before and after Gu Jiao, respectively.
"Master Lu, Mistress Nanxiang!" Xiaojingkong warmly and hospitably invited the two into the courtyard. His eagle and seven chicks, each adorned with a big safflower, lined up in the courtyard to form a welcoming formation. It was indeed very ceremonial!
Mistress Nan couldn’t love this little guy enough, and she said with a smile, "You must be Jingkong, right?"
"Yes, Mistress Nan!" Xiaojingkong said adorably.
An adult and a child chatted away merrily. Xiaojingkong enthusiastically introduced his chicks and the eagle chick to Mistress Nan, and of course, he didn’t forget to introduce Gu Yan’s little dog as well.
"That’s Xiaoba, who is a bit timid."
Xiaoba gallantly arched its back.
Timid? Where was it timid!
It was the bravest chicken-herding dog in the entire Capital City!
"Woof!"
The Zhao Family’s newly adopted big yellow dog from next door rushed in.
In a second, Xiaoba’s bravado was ruined, and reluctantly hiding behind the flock of chickens, it hugged its head with its paws, looking meek.
Mistress Nan liked this place very much.
Since she entered, the smile in her eyes never faded.
Seeing such an enthusiastic Nanxiang, Master Lu felt very gratified in his heart.
Xiaojingkong also considerately introduced the small vegetable garden to Mistress Nanxiang, proudly telling her that he was the one who watered the plants.
Nanxiang was so amused by the bobbing little fellow that she wished she could steal him away right then and there!
Under Xiaojingkong’s introduction, Nanxiang and Master Lu also met Fen Lin and Lin Chengye.
Surprisingly, the four of them got along very well.
Except, Lin Chengye felt a bit self-conscious and embarrassed about his stutter.
Nanxiang smiled and, without rushing to comfort him, simply took off her veil.
Lin Chengye and Fen Lin both froze for a moment, and then Lin Chengye blurted out a complete sentence, "It’s okay, actually Mistress Nan, you are very beautiful."
Nanxiang said in a daze, "I feel... I’ve seen him somewhere before."
Master Lu laughed, "How could you have seen him? He is Xiaoshun’s brother-in-law from the county city. You’ve never been there. But I’ve heard that he looks a lot like the late young Marquis of Zhaodu. Did you see the young Marquis of Zhaodu when you entered the palace before?"
Nanxiang shook her head, "No, it’s not from the palace..."
Nor from the Capital City.
Nanxiang looked unblinkingly at Xiao Liulang, trying hard to remember where she had seen him before.
"Ah! My books! My books are gone! Naughty!"
From the Study Room came Xiaojingkong’s howls.
Xiaojingkong was good in all respects, but not so good at tidying up. There was always the sound of him looking for things all day long.
Xiao Liulang did not hear their whispered conversation. He only noticed that Nanxiang was always staring at him, but as the host, he felt it was inappropriate to say anything.
"Mistress Nan, Master Lu, excuse me for a moment." He greeted them and then went to the Study Room to help Xiaojingkong find things.
If he didn’t help him find them, the little fellow could get so agitated that it would disrupt the peace of the entire household.
This was their first proper Moon Eve Festival in the Capital City. The old libation master was cooking personally, with Madam Hu and Yu Ya helping him, making a great spread of signature dishes—spicy lamb bone hot pot, hand-grabbed lamb, sweet and sour pork loin, Candied Pork Hock, fried lotus root patties, cold mixed bean curd skin, Crucian Carp Tofu Soup, plain mixed vegetables, hairy crabs, and several seasonal greens.
