The Painter, after looking for forty thousand Cosmic Eras, concluded that Eos’s feint had been a feint about nothing, designed only to waste the Painter’s attention, and, noting this, it adjusted its expectations of Eos’s tactics accordingly.
The Painter became, after this, slightly more willing to ignore Eos’s apparent feints, because some of them were about nothing.
This was the third mistake. The Painter had begun to underweight Eos’s misdirections.
Eos noticed the underweighting two hundred million Cosmic Eras later, by which point the woman in the observatory had been dead for a hundred and ninety-nine million years and the observatory had been sacked and rebuilt thousands of times and the order of women had evolved into a guild and the guild had evolved into a discipline and the discipline had spread, by trade and travel and the mechanisms by which disciplines spread, to one hundred and seven worlds on the same branch of the Tree.
One hundred and seven worlds, all using descendants of the word adro. None of them asking who watches. All of them, in their various local idioms, capable of saying something is not where it should be.
The substrate of that branch of the Tree had begun, by the gentle compounding pressure of a hundred and seven cultures all unable to ask the question the Cancellation had closed but all able to describe its absence, to develop a faint property that was not who watches and was not I am watched and was not anything the Cancellation had been built to close.
It was the property of something is missing here.
This was a metaphysical property that belonged to the substrate, not the inhabitants. It was the kind of property that, accumulated across enough worlds for enough Cosmic Eras, would begin to have effects on the geometry of the branch itself.
Eos saw the property begin to take shape and did not, even now, look at it directly.
He made his third move of the second age.
The third move was to encourage trade between the hundred and seven worlds and a hundred and seven other worlds on six other branches of the Tree.
He did this by allowing, at the level of taste in the substrate, certain shipping routes to seem slightly more attractive to the merchants who plied them. He did not need to whisper to the merchants. The substrate of an Existence has a faint texture of preference, and a tenth-dimensional being who is also the Telos of that Existence can adjust the texture by a margin smaller than any inhabitant could detect.
The merchants, finding the routes attractive, traded.
They carried goods and also carried stories. They carried, embedded in the stories, the small, unannounced habit of saying something is not where it should be, and the stories were translated into the local idioms of the worlds they reached, and the habit, in being translated, took root in the new languages.
After two hundred million more Cosmic Eras, three of the seven new branches had developed their own descendants of adro. The total was now four branches. After a Grand Cosmic Era, eight branches. After three Grand Cosmic Eras, twenty-three.
The Painter, who had been monitoring the broad health of the Cancellation’s work, noticed at the twenty-third branch that the Cancellation’s effective reach had begun to plateau. It had not lost ground. It was still closing the question of who watches on every world it reached. But the rate at which the substrate of the affected worlds returned to baseline calm after the closure had begun, very slightly, to slow.
Examining the Cancellation, the Painter saw that the piece was working as designed, and it examined the worlds to find that the worlds had no asking left in them, and yet it knew that something was wrong, but it could not find a cause.
The Painter looked at Eos.
Eos was, at that moment, making a small move on a different branch of the Tree, a move involving the introduction of a new musical interval into the folk music of a particular continent.
He had been doing this so that, when he finally executed a feint that was not a feint, the Painter would dismiss it.

The frequency was not music. It was the harmonic signature of something is not where it should be, transposed into the auditory register.
